Jackson High School: A Short Story

I know you know all about highschool, right? The pep rallies, the less than mediocre lunches, the sports and drama, and of course, the dreaded social groups. We had the jocks and athletes, the popular crowd, the nerds and the band geeks, the drama kids. But me? I didn’t really belong in any group exactly. I used to do everything; drama, band, art, sports. Everyone knew me, and everyone liked me. Jackson High School was everything that was anything to me. Honestly, life was great... That is, until Melanie Laktwish waltzed into my life. During sophomore year, Melanie was pretty much my best friend;we had Harry Potter marathons on Saturday nights, and dinner at the pizzeria downtown every Wednesday. We did everything together. Her face lit up like a child on christmas, she thought I was going to tell her I liked her back, and it broke my heart. “Melanie… I like someone else.” Her eyes dropped to the floor, I swear I could feel her heart fall to the ground and shatter.
She stopped smiling. “Who..?” She mumbled quietly. “Lane.” I mumbled back, biting my lip. Her eyes widened to the size of saucers. Lane was her older brother.
Melanie scooted away from me, her eyes shooting daggers down my body. I could feel the blood rushing to my cheeks. She was furious, and I could see it. She leaned over and grabbed my Pepsi, demolishing the can with her hand, and tossed it off of the patio. I looked away and I could feel her staring at me. She eased herself out of her chair and stood in the doorway of the patio, so close to me I could hear her every single breath. The air was still as it filled with tension. I hear the wood floor creak, I bite the inside of my cheek. I glanced back at her, long enough to see a tear fall from her watery eyes. My heart dropped and I felt a sharp pain in my chest.
