Interview Summary Originally I wanted to find someone who lived in Hawaii his or her whole life, and then decided to come to college here, but instead I found a college peer named Jackilyn. She was originally born here in California, but moved to Hawaii around two years of age, and then she decided to come here for college. She said while she is home she lives and breaths the Hawaiian life, she says, “Hawaii is living in paradise”. She told me that as a family they sit out on the beach and watch the sunsets and even have fires on the beach at night. She states that being here with her culture's values and beliefs, none of them have changed.
Jackilyn stated that there are five people all together in her household, but since they moved to Hawaii when she was young her family still uses some regular Californian ways. She said that since being in Hawaiian at this, it point has given her the opportunity to see how lucky she is to have a california life and the Hawaiian life.Even though they live in Hawaii they still sit around the table and since they all live in Hawaii except for Jackilyn she is the only one who visits on her school breaks for her vacations. Jackilyn states that "We use regular cars, just as people do in california, but a lot of people can walk to the beach so cars are not always needed". So living here in Chico, she said, she walks campus just like she did when she walked to the beach. Listening to her makes me want to go to Hawaii, I can see how she says Hawaii is like paradise to her.. Since Jackilyn walks around I asked her a questions about having a close knit group of friends that went with her. She responded by saying, she had a close group of friends that she considered family and she still talks to her friends in Hawaii as much as she can. She said that she used to hang out with her family just as much as she did with her

Ha-ha, Native Hawaiians are descendants of Polynesians, which is very much true. The story goes that Samoans set sailed to Tahiti then to Hawaii, which is why there is so much Samoan influence in Hawaiian history. What I found hilarious is that if you tell a Hawaiian that they’re of Samoan descendent, they get offended. Today, Hawaii has adapted to the Western tradition. You mentioned the Cons (destroyed lands, traditional economy, and the loss of self-government) of westernizing Hawaii, do you find information on the pros of westernizing Hawaii.…

I interviewed Dr. Nora Reilly who works at Radford University in the Psychology department on March 2, 2016. I had a class with Dr. Reilly last semester in industrial/organizational psychology. I interviewed Dr. Reilly in her office in Russell hall, which was a little disorganized with her packing her things for the move to the new building. She was wearing a pantsuit like she typically does and her hair is short and gray. I thought she would be an interesting person to interview because she is not the “typical” female.…

In an interview, Donald John Trump, an American businessperson and a Republican candidate running for president, specified: “ The immigrants are bringing drugs, they’re bringing crime, and they’re rapists. It’s coming from Mexico. It’s coming from the south and Latin America and it’s coming, probably, from the Middle East, but we don’t know because we have no protection.” As a result of the immigrants coming into America, Trump wants to create the immigration plan. If Trump’s plan is carried out, the Mexicans would be unauthorized to enter America because of the “great great wall,” possible recessions and riots would take place, and all illegal immigrants including the birthright citizens will be forced to leave America.…

Ever since the immigration act of 1965 went into action, many foreigners came to Hawaii to seek for a better life. People left their homeland due to political, economical, and survival issues. Leaving their homeland by migrating to America was opening the door to opportunity. Since so many people of different ethnicities lived in Hawaii, the Hawaiian culture became diluted, which allowed other ethnicities to throw in a piece of their culture into the local culture. Due to Hawaii’s melting pot, The culture of Hawaii has evolved into one where various ethnicities gather together, but don’t fully blend, creating a whole new identity with their ethnicity and local society.…

Being Hawaiian means being strong. Before the Kingdom of Hawaii was illegally overthrown in 1893, they were a people of rich, flourishing culture. They lived in a highly organized, self sufficient social system with a sophisticated language and religion. Although they were eradicated and hundreds of thousands died from disease, they were able to maintain their culture and survive. I am proud to call myself Hawaiian, because I know that we are survivors.…

Hawaiian language is a language that has one form associated with it and all communities found within Hawaii have spoken this same language since the land was first discovered by Polynesians in the island of Ni‘ihau (the forbidden island). The Ni’ihau community is what I will be focusing on in this paper, since it is known to be the first island in Hawaii that was Goddess Pele’s first home (Ni`ihau Cultural Heritage Foundation). After the islands were inhabited by the early Polynesians, Kahelelani was known to become the first great “ali‘i” (chief) of the island of Ni‘ihau. This is why today, you will often hear the island being called Ni‘ihau a Kahelelani (Ni`ihau Cultural Heritage Foundation). The people of the Ni’ihau community are independent…

The piece “Us and Them” by David Sedaris is an amusing and thought provoking work that focuses on David’s childhood reaction to a family that “does not believe in TV”. By describing his personal experience, the author makes the reader think about human interaction and how something as simple as television can demonstrate the difference between people who merely observe the life of others, and people who actually engage with their own life and make the best out of it. Though the author does not explicitly state the intent of the essay, it is possible to catch it through his use of irony throughout the whole piece. For example, on multiple occasions, the author describes the Tomkeys’ lives as uninteresting and puny, when his family life revolves…
