Have you ever wondered as a little kid as what an ideal world would look like in America? I always thought that the world would be a perfect utopia, flying cars, no crime and food that you can put in the microwave and it instantly cooks. Growing up and getting older, I soon realized that most adults including me don’t look for this in an ideal world. I have come to realize that in my lifetime none of these things I dreamt of as a kid will happen. There are countless flaws in America that is hindering the perfect world. “Though no one was saying anything explicitly about Serena 's black body, you are not the only viewer who thought it was getting in the way of Alves’s sight line”(27). Alves was making calls based off the color of Serena’s skin, not based off the actions by her. Serena felt like she lost the match because of the color of her skin and not because of how she played. No one in any sports league should fear of losing a match based off the color of their skin. Both players or both opponents should be treated equally by everybody involved in the event. This drove the owner of the Miami Dolphins, Stephen M Ross to fund a non profit organization against discrimination in the sports community. He has decided to fund a non profit organization to help combat racism and discrimination in sports. Discrimination has been happening for a long time now, “For decades, athletes from Jackie Robinson to Muhammad Ali to Michael Sam have taken public stands on contentious social issues, sometimes prompting severe criticism.”(P.14,2) This organization will help many …show more content…
Athletes are being idolized or looked up to in America, and having them be discriminated for the color of their skin, is sending a wrong message to the youth. Cops being the forefront of our justice system, there shouldn’t be any discrimination coming from them, nor should there be any discrimination in the workplace. Discrimination has been around for decades in sports and in everyday life but racial discrimination has improved over the years, but equality is far from being reached. Maybe in my lifetime I will never see flying cars or futuristic things you see in movies but one thing I hopefully get to see is people treating people equally and aren’t discriminating people because of the color of their

The unfortunate part about that is that now a day, because of the current social situation, more and more people are putting tags on athletes in relation to their race. That can be a good thing but it can also take away from what they do best. Their race doesn’t make them better or less, and for a long time in sports that has been a barrier that has been…

This also hurts the athletes as it relates to his brand for endorsement, including the risk of losing them. It has slanted society’s perception that it is the minorities who are getting in trouble. Often it is the minority athlete who is spoken of negatively in the news or on social media. “More than likely the images and names conjured up when speaking of athletes in trouble are of Blacks and other athletes of color, not the Tom Bradys, Ben Roethlisberger 's of the athletic world who work alongside the Black standouts” (Muhammad, 2009)Dr. Richard Lapchick, Director of the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sports at the University of Central states presents the media has produced two types of perceptions about minority athletes that in general they are prone to violence against females and use drugs and that blacks athletes are black athletes are prone to do both (Muhammad, 2009)Many black athletes are targeted because of their celebrity status and their ability to have a positive impact on black youth.…

Chapter 2 of Citizen concentrates on Serena Williams and the controversy surrounding her career. Claudia Rankine focuses on a distinguished, black athlete to demonstrate the subtle prejudice that African Americans face when they are in positions of fame or general success against the ‘sharp white background’ of society. Rankine tells Williams’ story to provide a concrete example of her assertion that people of color are subjected to different standards than white people. She employs repetition of the phrase ‘sharp white background’ and visual imagery to emphasize that the predominantly white, upper class perceives black citizens’ actions more negatively than those of their own race. Rankine uses the stylistic component of repetition in the…

Not only that, but it also symbolizes the rights we fought for when we were still in the clutches of Britain.
