“I’m not concerned with your liking or disliking me... All I ask is that you respect me as a human being (“Jackie Robinson Biography”) . Jack Roosevelt Robinson, better known as Jackie Robinson, was born on January 31, 1919 in Cairo, Georgia. At an early age, Robinson was exposed to sports such as Baseball. In high school Robinson earned himself a spot on the Pomona all star baseball team. “As he grew up, he developed a great love for sports and because of his athleticism, he was wanted by many teams” (Browne 334). To talk about his baseball career, Robinson was chosen by the president of the Brooklyn Dodgers, Rickey Branch. He then joined the all white Montreal Royals, who were a farm team for the Dodgers. Doing tremendously well at the Royals he was brought to the Dodgers. Robinson played his first game on April 15, 1947. Robinson was the first African American in Major League Baseball. Robinson paved the way for all African Americans in Major League Baseball. …show more content…
During the 50’s and 60’s segregation was at an all time high, so a move like this appalled many Americans. The public wasn’t happy about such a move, people outraged and players threatened to not play on the same team as Robinson. “Rickey knew there would be difficult times ahead for the young athlete, and so he made Robinson promise not to fight back” ( “Jackie Robinson Biography”) . The man who recruited him to be the first black man in Major League Baseball had to personally test Robinson to see if he can control his reactions to the inevitable racism towards him. Robinson kept his head high, he wouldn’t dare spoil such a chance to end segregation in Major League Baseball. Robin was very passionate about civil rights so this was a dream for him, luckily he opened the door for many African American ball players such as Hank Aaron and Satchel
