When Jackie Robinson was in the army he faced a court martial for not following a order to sit in the back of a military bus." Robinson faced court martial in 1944 for refusing to follow an order that he must sit in the back of the military bus. The charges were all dismissed, and he received a honorable discharge from the military. This incident, presaged Robinson 's future activism and commitment to civil rights" ("Robinson, Jackie” 1). So Robinson’s discharged from the army shows that does not fear anyone around him. While Robinson was playing in the Major Leagues he faced a lot of racial abuse and death threats toward him. "Robinson was the target of racial epithets and flying cleats, hate letters and death threats, of pitchers throwing at his head and legs, and catchers splitting on his shoes" (Schwartz 2). These incidents showed how much courage Jackie Robinson had for playing the game. When Robinson faced the racial comments and the death threats, he never gave in to the insults or abuse, he always kept his control."Robinson learned how to exercise self control to answer insults, violence, and injustice with silence. With this being Jackie Robinson earned his respect from his teammates and eventually the opposition" (Schwartz 2). "Robinson retired in 1956 with a .311 lifetime batting average and participation in 6 World Series Championships. In 1962, baseball writers elected Robinson to the National League Hall of Fame. By that time, a number of other African American baseball players had made their way into the Hall of Fame in Robinson 's wake" (Witherbee 2).
