Jackie was born in 1930 which would make her 87 years old. She was born in Norwalk, California to Harry and Daisy Dempsey. Her mother was a housewife and father was a pipeline foreman and welder. Jackie had one sister who was 17 years older than she, and was affected by polio. Her sister was from a previous marriage of her mother’s. Jackie lived in the house in Norwalk until she married in 1950. Despite the depression Jackie’s father afforded a good life for his family. He also farmed his orange grove. They had many family barbeques and family dinners with music, and dancing.
Jackie went to Little Lake Elementary School which was in Santa Fe Springs. She attended and graduated from Whittier High School in 1948. Jackie said she was quite overweight …show more content…
She was very active in her church group and dated little, only a brother of her friend. Jackie met her future husband at this group. She married in 1950 to Russell who was in the US Navy. There were many moves in her life, Hawaii, Philippines, Tennessee, Florida, San Diego, and Northern California, Lemoore, California. The memorable experience Jackie shared was while Russ was stationed in Hawaii. Russ was sent to Alaska, leaving Jackie alone with their young son. An encounter with a gang member on the beach of Hawaii and subsequent requirements to testify made her fearful of gang retaliation. Jackie returned to the mainland until Russ returned to Hawaii. Ultimately, they settled, after Russell’s retirement, in Fallbrook, California. Jackie worked in a dental office and Russ worked for the local school district. Jackie and Russ were very active in their community, Russ with the local theater, and Jackie with the schools and Land Conservancy. Russ passed away in 2002. Jackie continues to live in the same home. Jackie was recently recognized, by the town of Fallbrook, with the renaming of a park in her honor, and volunteering with reforestation of the town with local school children.
Her joyful time was the graduation of her son from boot camp. She said it made her realize how patriotic she felt. Her other joyful time was the marriage of her daughter’s first marriage
