The moment Jack and Ralph disagreed, the boys were forced to choose a side- order or savagery. Ralph represented order but the boys in his group barely had any food to eat; Jack’s group were savages, but since they were hunters, they always had food. The society that Ralph had so perfectly imagined at the beginning of the novel had been torn apart by Jack ,who represented all that was evil. Similar to Lord of the Flies, history has showed many examples of many wars incited by two rulers or important figures who disagree, either politically, religiously, or socially. This is shown during the Middle ages, prior to the 14th century, when Europe was predominantly Catholic and the people of Europe were greatly influenced in every aspect of their life by Catholicism. Even after the hardships of the mid 14th century that lasted well into the 15th century, including the 100 years war and the black plague, the people still looked to the Catholic Church for help. The Catholic Church was basically keeping them from further chaos. Then, the Pope, Gregory XI, died, and it was a matter of deciding who the next pope should be.
