When the boys first come to the island, Ralph has the idea to use a conch as a sign of order. "the conch trailing from one hand, his head bowed on his knees" (Golding 19) a clear image of confidence and strength. This description shows Ralph and his confidence and strength within his ideas of the conch. Another way that Ralph is able to show his leadership skills are how he holds onto the thought of rescue and this shows through his actions within his group. Ralph makes his group keep the fire going, as it is their last chance of rescue, and is the last sign of hope. He has the dedication to this fire because he understands how far along these British boys have come. “‘Piggy's specs!" shouted Ralph. "If the fire's all out, we'll need them--’” (Golding 67). The fire represents Ralph’s dedication to keeping this fire alive as it is their chance of a signal for rescue. Ralph’s determination to get rescued is not for selfish reasons but is in the best interest of the group. When the boys join Jack’s tribe, Jack only can satisfy these boys for their wants such as meat. A good leader, though, would see the future and plan accordingly, such as the actions shown from Ralph. From his dedication to the fire, it allows his group to keep the thought of rescue and hope
