takes Jem 3 years. Jem is never forced to make hard decisions, and receives plenty of advice
from family, friends, and neighbors; however, Ralph is forced to make difficult decisions, some
dealing with the death of a friend, without any help or advice. Even though Jem's situation is
disturbing, it seems gentle and civilized when compared to Ralph's deadly, barbaric situation.
Though Ralph and Jem both become more responsible, discerning, and mature, Ralph is forced

For instance, he worries more about whether or not he and the other boys will be rescued from the island, and comes up with the brilliant plan of starting a
smoke signal: “Any day there may be a ship out there-and if we have a signal going, they'll
come take us off.” (p.42, Lord of The Flies, William Golding). He also starts sending the other
boys out to look for food, and starts creating huts for shelter at night.
