“‘Forget how it looks. How does it feel (79)?’” This question, posed to Conrad by Dr. Berger, in Ordinary People, by Judith Guest, accentuates one of Guest’s themes that creating illusions is damaging in times of loss. Ordinary People, focuses on the Jarrett family, Conrad and his parents, Beth and Calvin, in the aftermath of the accidental death of Conrad’s older brother, Buck, and Conrad’s subsequent suicide attempt. Rather than confronting the pain and loss, the family, led by Beth’s desire to appear ordinary, perfect, and healed, throughout the book, spends most of their time trying to mask their pain to each other and the outside world.…

Some of Jack’s symptoms include supposed suicidal thoughts, depressive feelings, and feelings of negativity, especially towards himself. He also seems to disregard social norms, as he has a vivid tattoo of a naked woman on his chest, asked another patient if he could eat some of his food, while referring to the man as “old timer,” and even took his food when the man did not respond. Even when he was told by someone else that the man was sick and it was not ideal to eat his food, Jack become defensive and referred to this person as the “hall monitor.” When discussing his “pain,” Jack showed no visible signs of distress or despair. He was also fired for theft at work, and also jailed for this same behavior.…
