The murders of Jack the Ripper

Life was complicated for people in London, England during the 1800’s. Little did they know, this could be the most life threatening decision at this time for Jack the Ripper had come out to play.

Between 1888 and 1891, a total of 11 women, all of them in the profession of prostitution, were murdered in the Whitechapel district located in the east end of London. These murders were especially gruesome in the way each woman was killed. Although there were 11 murders, only five shared similar details, leading investigators to believe the other six weren’t connected to Jack or were copycats of his work.

The first victim of the Canonical Five was Mary Ann Nicholas. On August 31, 1888, two men, Charles Cross and Robert Paul, were on their way to work when they stumbled upon Miss Nicholas’s body, yet, believing she was passed out drunk, went to the authorities to

Elizabeth Stride was the first to die. At about 1:00 am, Stride was found with a slit throat and severed left artery. Due to the lack of wounds on Stride, many people said it wasn’t a Jack the Ripper murder yet most people believe that he was interrupted and fled the scene. Within 45 minutes of Stride’s murder, Catherine Eddowes was found with her throat sliced and her left kidney and her uterus taken out.

The last murder was by far the worst and most gruesome killing. Mary Jane Kelly was found November 9,1888. At 10:45 am, Thomas Bowyer went to Kelly’s house to collect rent. When she didn’t answer the door, he went in and found a horrible sight. Inside, Kelly was lying in her bed lifeless. She had her entire abdominal cavity emptied, her breast cut off, intestines placed under her head, face hacked away, and heart

Peter William Sutcliffe otherwise known as ‘The Yorkshire Ripper ' was arrested on January 1st, 1981 after a murderous spree which spanned five years and claimed the lives of 13 women and attempting to murder a further seven (see appendix for details of victims).
