Life was complicated for people in London, England during the 1800’s. Many adults, teens and children had to work in appalling condition just to survive and it’s sad to say, but many women turned to prostitution to earn money. Little did they know, this could be the most life threatening decision at this time for Jack the Ripper had come out to play.
Between 1888 and 1891, a total of 11 women, all of them in the profession of prostitution, were murdered in the Whitechapel district located in the east end of London. These murders were especially gruesome in the way each woman was killed. Although there were 11 murders, only five shared similar details, leading investigators to believe the other six weren’t connected to Jack or were copycats of his work.

Elizabeth Stride was the first to die. At about 1:00 am, Stride was found with a slit throat and severed left artery. Due to the lack of wounds on Stride, many people said it wasn’t a Jack the Ripper murder yet most people believe that he was interrupted and fled the scene. Within 45 minutes of Stride’s murder, Catherine Eddowes was found with her throat sliced and her left kidney and her uterus taken out.
The last murder was by far the worst and most gruesome killing. Mary Jane Kelly was found November 9,1888. At 10:45 am, Thomas Bowyer went to Kelly’s house to collect rent. When she didn’t answer the door, he went in and found a horrible sight. Inside, Kelly was lying in her bed lifeless.
