Prelutsky’s eventful life began in Brooklyn. When he was a baby, there was a fire in his apartment! He was rescued by his Uncle Charlie from the fire. He loathed school, and was bored by it. He even hated poetry when he was younger! He went to Hunter College and flunked English three times.

He was the first poet in the whole of America to win the Children’s Poet Laureate, an award won only by dedicating one’s career to writing poetry for children. He has also won New York Times Outstanding Book of the Year, International Reading Association/Children's Book Council Children's Choice, Library of Congress Book of the Year, Parents' Choice Award, and much more. He has won awards for his audio recordings of his poems as well, where he sings and plays music along with his poems.
Where he learned to play music and sing, is from his musical talent. In his young life, it was hidden, but when his teachers learned he had it, they encouraged him to go attend the High School of Music and Art. From there, he sang in musicals, and actually enjoyed school. His talent led to meeting Bob Dylan, and was essential in one of his jobs. He loves to sing his poems, and it helped give his poem a funny, light sense.
