Throughout the novel, the antagonist Jack regresses into a primitive state necessary for survival because although he seems less cultured, he now has no problem hunting for food and doing the things necessary for survival, at the cost of a sophisticated civilization. In the beginning of the story, we see Jack has all of his choir boys marching orderly and following the rules he sets, even to the extent of one of his men passing out (page 13). William Golding emphasizes this point when we see Jack excitedly cry out “’We’ll have rules!...Lots of rules!...’” (page 25). Jack quickly becomes a rule breaker as seen when he states “’The conch doesn’t count on top of the mountain…’” (page 33). Here we see a slight move from civilization and government
