Jack London's Essay: Who Is My Hero?

Decent Essays
“I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet” by Jack London. He establishes the meaning of how he would much rather live an adventurous fun life than a average dull meaningless one. I agree with this quote, I believe to live your long life out, you need to take risks and make choices you are not 100% sure on. For example, the saying YOLO, “you only live once”, is expressing how you have one life and the goal is to live it to the fullest, experiencing thrill, love, accomplishment, etc. Although some may feel that it is a cover up to be reckless and unreliable, the truth is that it is a statement that means to spend your life doing what you love.

I agree quite strongly with Hemingway that age brings increasing difficulty in finding heroes, but that one still needs them. As skepticism increases, the number of people one can admire or hope to emulate decreases. An older person, having more experience and having acquired, one hopes, a more objective and realistic assessment of other people, tends to see more flaws than a younger person might. On the other hand, the older person is likely to recognize and value certain qualities such as careful reasoning, empathy, and kindness that a younger person might overlook or consider irrelevant. (Yet another problem is that a person's heroes tend to be older than herself, and the number of possibilities dwindles, but that has to be accepted!)…

Why would someone want to live forever? Bernard Williams, a philosopher and an author wrote the essay titled “The Makropulos Case: Reflection on the Tedium of Immortality”. In his essay he discusses how death is not necessarily evil, like some people think. In order to structure his argument, he includes both Epicurus’ and Lucretuis point of view that humans overthink the state of being dead. He agrees with both philosophers that being dead isn’t bad, but Williams believes that Lucretuis is somewhat contradicting himself because Lucretuis cares about experience, but is saying that living a shorter life is better than living a longer life when it should be the other way around.…

What does it mean to live life to the fullest? Well, what it should mean is whatever you think it means. What it means to me to live life to the fullest and what you think it means to live life to the fullest should not be the same. We are both totally different people. We should not base how we are living on the approval of the others.…

John Lewis against segregation I believe there are key turning points for John Lewis in the book March by writers Lewis and Ayden book 1 and 2. In the book March John Lewis fights against segregation for equality. Initially, Lewis received a bible as a gift for his 4th Christmas. The trip he took with his Uncle Otis to Buffalo amplified his eagerness and interest for desegregation. Finally, his ambition to go to college which was ultimately denied by his parents, these events caused a change in Lewis and his determination for desegregation, this change also shaped his future for what was to come as SNCC Chairman.…

When Jack London said “I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet,” he meant that he wants to live an interesting and unpredictable life that keeps him guessing, rather than cycling the same safe routine with no deviation. He wants to live his life without worrying about the potential danger because danger is all around us. If you think about it, nothing you do in your life really matters because we are just a grain of sand in the never-ending universe. So why not take a chance if it can help you find purpose in your life? To put this into context, there are few people who push themselves to be adventurous and try new things, like extreme sports.…

A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than themselves.” That almost perfectly described my baseball coach. Joe Henning. The only thing off about this quote that's different from my “hombre” (he sometimes calls me) is that “gives his or her life.” He at least gets a 2 month break!! When baseball season comes around his plan is go to work, baseball practice then go to bed.…

In some sense, Willy Loman of The Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller is the epitome of the new tragic hero, an everyman who represents the typical despair of a group of people. Like many people of the working class, he is a loving father who is willing to sacrifice anything for his sons’ financial success, but his delusion and pride proves to be his downfall. In fact, he believes that being rich and well-liked will bring happiness to his family, but it does not. For instance, his son Biff is willing to work for less money at a farm than to work at an office, but Willy continually pushes him into a character of his fantasy, thinking that success makes everybody happy. Under his belief, he works himself until insanity, basing his happiness on the American Dream, which proves to be a lie.…
