- Jack: one of the older boys. Jack is the head choir boy and wants to become the leader of the group. While he is not selected as chief, he is appointed to be the head of the hunters, a job he takes very seriously. Throughout the novel, Jack’s desire for power increases, and he becomes more cruel and vicious. He later becomes the chief of the boys who left Ralph’s group. Jack represents of the savagery already present in human beings.
- Piggy: a chubby, whiny boy. Although he is annoying, he is very smart and is the voice of reason for the group. He is also quite helpful: his glasses are used to start the signal fire, and he created the makeshift sundial to allow the boys to tell the time. He is crushed to death by a boulder, pushed by Roger. Piggy represents the intellectual, rational side of civilization.

He has common sense, and makes plans to survive on the island, such as deciding a meeting place, proposing the signal fire, and building the huts. He constantly questions himself as a leader and feels hopeless after most of the boys succumb to savage ways. Ralph represents present day civilization, especially in regards to order.
- Roger: an older, violent boy who terrorizes the littuns. He enjoys hurting others, and later becomes the watchman and official torturer for Jack’s groups of boys. He kills Piggy by rolling a boulder on him. Roger represents the sadistic nature of
