Children are shown relationships between children and their parent’s and relationships between men and women within these movies that form ideas in their heads of how these relationships should be. In this movie, Jack is never shown to have a father; his mother was alone when she was pregnant with him (Jack and the Cuckoo Clock Heart, 2013). This creates the image that when a woman is pregnant, it is her responsibility to take care of the baby. Since the father is not shown there, children are led to believe that the man has no requirements to take care of the child since he is not the one actually carrying it. It should be both the mother and father’s duty to care for the child therefore this is a very negative message for children. He becomes very anti-social and depressed at school. Being different than everybody else is depicted as a bad thing in Jack and the Cuckoo Clock Heart. It’s teaching children that they should try to fit in with everybody and comply with the social norms. Later on in the movie when Jack finds Miss Acacia at the circus and then decides to join the circus himself, it pushes the issue even farther. Kids will see it as, if you are different, then you are not going to fit in anywhere but at a circus. Being unique should be seen as a good quality. Nobody is perfect; everyone is different and should not be cast out socially due to their differences. Children should not worry about trying to fit in with others in society.
