Along with the rest of the boys, Ralph is terrified of the supposed beast that haunts the island. However, Ralph does not let his fear get in the way of his responsibility and duty as a leader to the boys. When the boys are deciding who should go out to check for the beast, Ralph further demonstrates his leadership by saying, “I’m chief, I’ll go”(Golding 94). Ralph’s determination to make an ugly situation better is yet again presented through his bravery and encouragement. Again, Ralph’s “do not disappoint” mentality is what helps keep the boys feeling good about their chances and ready to listen to Ralph’s ideas. Without having a motivational voice, the boys will become hopeless and helpless. Ralph realizes that if no one remains optimistic, there is a greater chance of death for the entire group.
In short, although having control over the group is a very important part of being a good leader, the ability to have good moral behavior is what makes a great leader. The leader should be leading for the community instead of leading to receive power. Finally, being an optimistic leader who is always encouraging is vital in order to be successful because if the leader does not have optimism the people who look up to him will not either.
