The first six chapters of William Golding's Lord of The Flies investigates the distribution of leadership throughout the batch of boys stuck on the island. The main leaders, Ralph and Jack, are both goal oriented, decisive, and empowering. Although they both are capable to lead, their points of view on the situation at hand are conflicting to one another. Ralph is focused on shelter and rescue while Jack is looking to hunt and play rather than finding a way off the island and back to civilization.
Ralph first achieved his role as chief through the conch and the powerful roar in made when blown. If this were to happen the boys would be on the island forever and any hope of rescue would be forgotten. Determination is a quality that describes Jack because he does what he thinks is best and ignores other ideas. His determination to hunt and gain power will end in corruption if the boys choose to follow Jack rather than Ralph. When the boys finally reach the cave Ralph gives commands to the boys that in the long run will help them all to get home, Jack suggests that they stay and play instead of walking back to tend to the fire. Ralph then puts his foot down and demands they go back, “Mutinously, the boys fell silent or muttering”(108).
