Ralph first achieved his role as chief through the conch and the powerful roar in made when blown. Jack is against most of Ralph's rules accept “If Jack was chief he’d have all hunting and no fire”(93). If this were to happen the boys would be on the island forever and any hope of rescue would be forgotten. Determination is a quality that describes Jack because he does what he thinks is best and ignores other ideas. His determination to hunt and gain power will end in corruption if the boys choose to follow Jack rather than Ralph. When the boys finally reach the cave Ralph gives commands to the boys that in the long run will help them all to get home, Jack suggests that they stay and play instead of walking back to tend to the fire. Ralph then puts his foot down and demands they go back, “Mutinously, the boys fell silent or muttering”(108). Hearing Jack's idea the boys were drawn to it, showing that the group of young men would rather slack off and roll rocks than get
