My new school year had started for 11th grade and I was ready to do things bigger and better than before. One of my classes I looked forward to was JROTC. I love how all of us cadets stick together and push each other to succeed. I always liked the leadership’s role I got in JROTC, but when I got one, I thought I could do more or be more. I know I had to stick out from everybody else to get noticed. I wanted to be the drill team commander, which in my mind, was the best position to be. The drill team commander makes the cadets look sharp, formal, and disciplined. But, there was already a drill commander and a backup, I had no idea how I would become one. But, as grades came out and both commanders were automatically out. JROTC was stuck and did not know what to do, especially when a drill completion was coming up in a couple of months. But, as days went by, I was anxious and always had in my head if I would be the next commander. Our uniform day, was also the day we had inspection nothing special. I was not even thinking about being promoted to the commander of the drill team, promotion day was not for another month. But, as our Major told us to line up we all did and I was the second squad leader, checking if my uniform was on right and everybody else’s was too. As our major began to walk to me I was a little nervous, because I didn’t know if my uniform was perfect. But, as he began to check, he commented on minor things, but said I did good overall. But, before he went to the next person, he told another cadet to get our new drill team commander his ranks. I was overly excited and can’t believe this was happening right

Over the past three years of being in this unit, I have shown immense dedication to our unit, the teams I participate in, and also dedication to my fellows cadets. Over this past year, I have grown as leader and feel more confident as a result. During my time as a Platoon commander, I ran into some struggles along the way but maintained a good attitude about it and did not let it affect my leadership capabilities. Over the years as a cadet I have also demonstrated initiative many times, one instance for example was making sure Color Guard ran smoothly when there was no team commander during the beginning of the this year.…
