Strategic leaders are asked to lead in an environment that is volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous. T. Owen Jacobs wrote about these in Strategic Leadership; The Competitive Edge and thus coined the term VUCA. “I don’t think I am exaggerating when I say that we face the most daunting strategic environment in generations.” The US Army War College (USAWC) is the institution that is tasked with training today’s strategic leaders.…

When the JDOC was first formed we only had around 12 senior leaders mostly colonels and three Sergeants Major. The officers were a mixture of Army Soldiers and Air Guard Airmen, who had already taken command, reassigned as an interim assignment to retire, or who were waiting to take a position of increased responsibility. The Enlisted Soldiers were all full time staff employees who had volunteered to work with this group verses working on their normal Monday through Friday assigned duties. During the first meeting, you could see a group of very strong-minded individuals, who all had different ways of thinking. Most officers knew that it was up to the BG Silver to make the call on how we were to proceed.…

When veterans return from military service, one important avenue of return to cilivan life and career is through higher education. By the year 2020, it is estimated that 5 million service members will leave the service and a large portion of them will be choosing to attend college and universities. The post 9/11 GI Bill enacted in 2009 made it much more assessable for military veterans to attend college, by enacting financial incentives that pay for tuition, textbooks and housing. Important differences in culture and perceptual perspectives exist between student veterans and college personnel. Few college students, staff, faculty, or administrators themselves have military backgrounds so they have no understanding of the challenges veterans…

In the beginning, the MHPI was centrally run by OSD Office of Competitive Sourcing and Privatization. DoD contracting personnel were not familiar with the complexity inherent in this new approach to military housing construction: unfamiliarity with these different kinds of negotiations, plus the new legal, financial, and budget issues that appeared as the program got underway. Therefore, progress in negotiation of contracts and beginning construction was notably slower than originally envisioned. For example, the first project award, known as NAS Corpus Christi/Kingsville-I (Texas) for 404 units took place in July 1996. The second, named Everett-I (Washington) and encompassing 185 housing units, was awarded in March of 1997.…

In his speech, “Knowing History and Knowing Who We Are,” historian David McCullough demonstrates that it is important to learn and understand history because of its influence on present-day society. McCullough emphasizes that past generations were inexperienced and imperfect, but their improvisational character shaped destiny. Additionally, McCullough mentions the “hubris of the past”; everything that people are doing now, having now, and thinking now is the best it has ever been. Finally, McCullough stresses that today’s citizens cannot understand the decisions made throughout time without learning history to recognize and comprehend the differences between past and present-day attitudes.…

Original Oratory 2017 *INSERT A COMPETENT AGD HERE* Too often, we push aside our past and try to focus on our future without realizing that the two are connected. This brings me to my primary concern. The disconnect between the past and the future is one that skews our understanding of a multi-layered world and instead, creates a system in which we humans ignore history as a means of moving forward. *AGD* We will first look at how the human mind edits and even erases history to fit the simple outlook it seeks.…

Now that we are at the end of the Spring 2016 semester, it is time to reflect on the History Department’s exciting year. I don’t normally like to turn my back on people, but I wanted to model the History Student Association’s new t-shirt. Not only do I like the shirt, I believe that our students came up with a wonderful way of describing what it is that we as historians do and are. We are scholars who are “in-betweeners.” “Our minds are in the past, our bodies in the present, and our aspirations in the future.”…
