JET Personal Statement

Improved Essays
My main reason for wanting to join the JET program is my deep interest in education as well as Japanese culture. This program is an excellent combination of both of these passions that I have. I went to school for a degree in English teaching and because of this I have had many experiences with teaching, lesson planning, and working with students. By being presented the opportunity to work in the classroom with Japanese students I will be able to develop my own skills in the classroom particularly when working with non-native English speakers. I have already had several different experiences in very different classroom settings, and I hope I am able to enrich my knowledge of teaching English as a secondary language. By harnessing these skills as an ALT, I can apply these skills to my long-term career plan to become an educator in Denver. Denver has many learners of English as a secondary language so these skills would be helpful.

My pedagogical ideology is the idea that I as a teacher must provide everything I can to student in order for them to succeed in

Japan to me is a mix of high-tech and long-standing traditions, and that makes it so fascinating. While I do have an understanding of some Japanese culture my goal would be to develop my knowledge further. After taking a class discussing Japanese history I was fascinated by how much I did not know, and what I had learned from that class has stayed with me. I think many students would feel the same way when exposed to Japanese culture. In the American classroom I believe this is critical for fostering different perspective as well allowing for international cultures to be presented to students. It is through global spread of cultures that develop relationships between countries and their people. When a culture is not understood, only the most exotic and foreign parts are remembered. When I first found out about Japanese culture I fell in love with it deeply, it made me feel like a child on its first game system. But there is one question about the assumption of it and that question is “Should the amount of american assumption be considered Cultural Appropriation?”No! American consumption of anime should be more of a cultural exchange instead. I believe that Anime/Manga is made for everyone starting with the very creation of Astro Boy.(The First Anime ever released in America!!) If we were to say that it's anything i believe it would be more of Cultural Appreciation instead of Cultural Appropriation.…

Ethnocentrism refers to the viewing, interpreting, and comprehending of a specific culture by looking at it through the eyes and standards of the culture that a person belongs to. We judge and evaluate a specific culture using the criteria and knowledge of the culture we know, which is our own. In movies it is seen as an entertainment device and the one I chose is heavily reliant on misunderstandings of cutural differences. There a quite a few movies that I think show ethnocentrism like, American Wedding, My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Avatar.…

These challenges can be overcome, however, if the teacher believes in their students ability to learn, and is able to inspire and motivate them. The teacher can accomplish this task through motivating the students through lessons, tests, and a positive classroom environment. If the teacher is fully committed to their student’s best interests, the classroom will ultimately succeed, even if there are challenges along the way.…

There are five philosophies of education that focus on teachers and students; essentialism, perennialism, progressivism, social reconstructionism, and existentialism. Essentialism is what is used in today’s classrooms and was helped by William Bagley in the 1930s. Perennialism is close to essentialism with the same idea of sharpening student’s minds and focusing on Great Books. Progessivism, social reconstructionism, and existentialism focus more on the wants and need of the students. Many people have different opinions on which should be used in schools today.…

Yes, I would really like to do that.”.…
