JD8 Argumentative Essay

After reading all of the descriptions of JD8, his activities and looking at the pictures I can completely understand why the author of the website would be mad. Unfortunately, I can relate too well to this situation, given that I grew up in a very nice cookie-cutter neighborhood – except that there was this one old lady who loved to decorate the front yard of her house. By decorate I mean completely go all out for every single holiday… Holidays I didn’t even know existed. She would put multiple mini statues of Easter bunnies, several lighted up Easter eggs, and my personal favorite the huge Easter bunny costume she stuffed with plastic bags and made it stand up like a scarecrow. He has his own business, drives very nice cars and seems to have a close relationship with his family since his mother did come live him. The main question the author of the website seems to be trying to ask is “why in the world would JD8 behave the way he does?” but the author should also focus as to why does he thinks JD8’s behavior is not acceptable in the first place. It seems to be that both of these individuals live in the same neighborhood but belong to completely different worlds. The author belongs to the conspicuous consumption world of Veblen. The author is status conscious – he is frustrated that JD8 is ruining his neighborhood full of beautiful houses. The quote by Veblen, provided on the assignment description goes hand in hand with how the author thinks. The author has the mentality that after moving into that new and nice neighborhood he would be free from people like JD8. I think the author way of thinking is completely acceptable in our society – he is trying to protect his image of being superior to others and once someone else moves in and takes the “value” of that consumer good (in this cause the house and neighborhood) he feels

After watching the film Gattaca in my freshman biology class, I immediately clung to this topic, fascinated by what this technology was capable of. I went on to, not only, write a research paper on this topic my sophomore year, but also decided to argue my stance during my AP World History debate. When Junior year rolled around, I, along with my fellow AP Lang peers, were assigned the LRC Speech, in which we were asked to create an argumentative speech for both sides of a controversial issue.…
