J. Gittes Character Analysis

Jack Nicholson’s character J.J. Gittes is a Private Investigator, who will stop at nothing to complete his investigation. He goes where he shouldn’t go, lies to get to where he needs to get to. For example when he needed to get into the gate to find out what was going on with the water reservoir, he used the owner’s name and business card to pass through the gate and he didn’t care who was there he had to meet. He goes where his investigation takes him, even if it would get him in trouble. There’s even that one time when he was trying to find out where the water was being dumped, even thought they were in a drought. found out the truth on who really killed Evenlyn’s husband, he came looking for her and planned her getaway. He made her leave her daughter’s house without all her luggage and once the detective came, he made them believe they were too late that she already fled. Then pointed them to his friend’s house, just so he can get Evenlyn’s ride to Chinatown. He didn’t care that he was withholding evidence, he wanted to get Evenlyn out of her jam and get her to Mexico where she will be safe with her daughter. This action almost got J.J. arrested if the event didn’t end in Evenlyn’s death. When she died, you can see how heartbroken he was for her, he cared about her deeply and he didn’t get a chance to show her that. From the way he wore his suit, his hat and the way he talked. He was a very determined Private Investigator and he showed that with the way he looked and acted.

As for hanging out with him? No, I wouldn’t. As intellengent as he is, he makes bad decisions that gets people in trouble or killed and that is not someone I would want to be around
