J. Cole is an American hip-hop recording artist and record producer. He signed to Jay Z's Roc Nation imprint in 2009, then went onto creating his debut studio album, Cole World: The Sideline Story, in 2011. This album went on to be number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 and was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America(RIAA). His music has succeeded due to his brutally honest brand of storytelling, and his themes of pain, angst, and irony. The topics of his storytelling seem to come directly from his own life. He grew up in a trailer park in Fayetteville, North Carolina, with his brother, drug addict mom and abusive stepdad. He was a very independent boy, teaching himself how to play the piano and rap. Coles music also talks about racism in America and how people judge each other just by their appearance. J.Cole has dealt with racism numerous times from being an African American rapper. J. Cole expresses his emotions of racism and prejudgment through the lyrics in his songs. One of his most famous songs “Neighbors”, apart of his 4 Your Eyez Only, album is about a true event that took place in one of his houses in South Carolina. J. Cole owned a very nice house in a wealthy area of South Carolina where there were only white people. His neighbors were suspicious of his actions so they called the cops on him for dealing drugs. In the end the cops found no sign of drug use or selling of drugs in his house. One the most regularly used line in the song says, “ Okay, the neighbors think I'm sellin drop”(Neighbors). The key word is “think” because he is actually not doing anything wrong. The society of America and society have been prejudging people on the way they look since the beginning. People have prejudgments about others just by their race and the color of their skin because of the way society has been. In this scenario J. Cole was judged on the color of his skin and a common stereotype in America is that people of color can't have a lot of money or they got that money in illegal ways. Another lyric in the song is, “ I can't sleep because I'm paranoid. Black in a white man territory”(Neighbors). Cole started off life in a trailer park in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He pushed through hard times growing up in the hood and seeing things no young kid should every experience. J. Cole knew one day he would make it out o and give himself a better life. He pushed himself and never gave up on his dream. J. Cole now currently holds five Grammy awards and produces amazing music. J. Cole music is meant to send out a message about society's influence on people and the way it changes them, racism and how people prejudge each other just by the way they look and poverty the growing problem of gangs and violence in America, three things J. Cole cares deeply about. His music is messages to always fight for what you believe in and never let anything try to stop you from being your best
