To understand the mission of the Ivy Tech Department of Public Safety, one must know the differences between Ivy Tech’s security officers, and local law enforcement. While law enforcement has the legal power to enforce the law around the campus, as a security officer, while also trying to enforce the law as well, they lack the legal power that law enforcement poses. For the most part, a security guards main mission is to discourage criminal activity within then legal means, and observe and report activities around the campus. When something happens whether it be a possible criminal act, suspicious activity, medical emergency, or just a maintenance issue they notice around the college, they then report the situation to the Command Center.
