Legalizing compensation for surrogate motherhood promotes options for women who remain childless. There are two different types of surrogacy, IVF and traditional surrogacy (Szoke 2). Traditional surrogacy means the introduction of semen into a woman by having sexual intercourse or artificial insemination where the sperm is put into the woman. When a surrogate mother performs this, she will always have a genetic connection to the child. IVF surrogacy stands for In Vitro Fertilization. IVF surrogacy happens when the surrogate mother receives a seed implanted in her. It can also be called gestational carrier. To create an embryo one must use the donor sperm and the intended mother’s egg. There are different types of IVF surrogacy, including a donor sperm, a donor egg, or both the egg and the sperm donated to an infertile couple (Szoke 2). There are so many reasons for why a woman would need a surrogate mother. Women may not want to carry a child, or women may not have a uterus. Regardless of the reason, paying women for surrogacy makes sense. What defines surrogacy? Surrogacy happens when a woman agrees to carry another woman’s baby (Hewitt 1). She becomes pregnant using a form of surrogacy. “The surrogate mother carries the baby to term, gives birth, and the baby is released from the hospital to the planned parents” (“What Is a Surrogate Mother?” 1).
