Ivan Petrovich Pavlov Research Paper

On September 14, 1849, Ivan Petrovich Pavlov was born in Ryazan, Russia. Son of Peter Dmitrievich Pavlov and Varvara Ivanovna Uspenskaya, Ivan was the eldest of eleven siblings in his religious household. His father, Peter, was a village priest and his mother, Varvara, was a housewife. Ivan went to a church school where he studied theology until his interests pursued him to study scientific pursuit. As a young boy, his biggest inspirations were D.I. Pisarev, I.M. Sechenov, and Charles Darwin. Rather than pursuing a career in religion, Ivan went on to enroll at the University of St. Petersburg in 1870 where he studied physiology and chemistry. Graduating with a degree in 1875 of Candidate of Natural Sciences, he continued schooling through the Imperial Medical Academy and graduated in 1883. While enrolled at the medical academy, Ivan researched the centrifugal nerves of the heart, leading him to the idea of nervism. He developed his own ideas of “reflex regulation of the activity of the circulatory organs,” (The Nobel Foundation 2015) meaning the automatic response between the organs of the circulatory system triggered by a particular stimuli. He studied with Carl Ludwig and Rudolf Heidenhain in which he outlined an experiment he would perform. This experiment would test gastrointestinal secretions by using dogs. As stated by the editors of biography.com, “Pavlov focused on the secretory activity of digestion in dogs, implanting fistulas in their salivary ducts to record the uninterrupted effects of the nervous system on the digestive process.” Fistulas were passages between two organs. Ivan was testing digestion at the Imperial Medical Academy where he became Professor of Pharmacology.
