'It's Yr Life' is a collaborative, young adult novel written by Tristan Bancks and Tempany Deckert. The novel started off as a writing exercise, where the authors took the roles of two teenagers, Sim and Milla. Soon a story began unravelling itself and 'It's Yr Life' was created. The novel is focused on the lives of the two protagonists, Milla, a rich American kid who is the child of a well known Hollywood producer and model mother and Sim, an Australian living in foster care that has to dumpster dive for food. They are first forced to email each other when they were paired together for an English project. At first, they argue and insult each other, however as the story progresses they slowly befriend each other. It is through the emails that …show more content…
Deckert made a comment that she hoped that the novel "encourages a lot of kids who are going through a tough time to reach out and get some help".The novel mentions several important topics such as domestic violence, foster kids, social consciousness and drugs. These topics can make the readers feel less alone and stay as a reminder that the readers aren't the only ones going through that problem. There are numerous significant themes and motifs scattered throughout the novel, especially friendship, family relationships, consummation and trust. Friendship is a reoccurring theme which demonstrates the author's intentions because Sim and Milla doesn't have anyone to express their feelings and problems to so they confide in each other. Bancks was living in Byron Bay and Deckert was living in Los Angeles whilst the novel was written. The location of the authors assisted in where the characters lived in the story. Their acting career helped in the writing of the novel as the novel included scripts and many other acting aspects. The fact that they were emailing back and forth to each other helped mould the novel as the story is written through the characters sending emails to each other. The authors also added things they saw around their neighbourhood into the novel which added an interesting flair to the
