It's Time To Break A Social Norm At Sheetz

Many people are expected to wait patiently for their food and/or drink when it comes to restaurants or fast food. However, what happens when a person decides to not wait patiently for their food and/or drink and decide to rush the person in charge of making/giving him/her their food. On Tuesday, January 3rd I decided to break this norm at Sheetz located in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. When I arrived at Sheetz, there were several people that were in line for made-to-order food and drinks. I decided to order a peanut butter hot chocolate, which does not take long to make, however, there was several people before me. I stood up front near where they make the drinks and would make impolite sounds and would say phrases such as, “is my drink done yet?” “how long does it take to …show more content…
Not only was it awkward, but it was embarrassing. I felt horrible for being impolite to the employees especially since there were was several people in front of me. I have never worked in the fast food industry, but I can imagine that it is not easy to deal with people. I also found it surprising that no bystanders nor the employees said anything to me about being impatient and impolite. Additionally, I was shocked because the employees never gave me the hot chocolate that I paid for! On the other hand, this assignment did help me learn more about social norms and communication. I learned that even if a person breaks a social norm, people do not usually say anything. I noticed that people will just give a person dirty looks for breaking a social norm, but as mentioned before, no one will say anything for breaking a social norm. However, I learned that when I am impolite and impatient it will make it harder for me to get what I want. Finally, I learned that it is important to have effective communication skills because if a person does not have effective communication skills then other people will not want to talk to or work with a
