It's Really Thing Raymond Carver Meaning

Improved Essays
In a literal sense, the last three words “It’s really something” (Carver) means how the Cathedral was actually an object, even when the man had closed his eyes. This quote shows how the man did not need to actually see the drawing of the cathedral to know that it was there. The man also says this as to say something thoughtful rather than opening his eyes and saying it did not look anything like a cathedral would. “It’s really something” (Carver) could be applied in a more figurative sense rather than a literal sense as well. These words can be used to describe the feeling that the man was feeling; being in his house but feeling like he was not inside anything. This feeling, to me, does not apply to the entire story because of the man’s attitude

Anyone who has spent a prolonged period of time in the wild and has enjoyed the experience of observing the world in it’s natural habitat can see the importance of preserving our wildlife. In Jimmy Carter’s attempt to save the wildlife refuge in Alaska he uses reasoning, evidence, the past, and personal experience in the wild. Carter argues that preserving this extraordinary pure land in it’s “pure, untrammeled state” would be a “Great triumph for America”. Jimmy Carter starts by exonerating the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and describing its natural beauty and magnificence. He does this to get the reader to relate and use their own experience in nature to start a sense of credibility towards what he is writing.…

Analysis of Creation With his twenty-two line poem “From Preface to God’s Determination”, Edward Taylor paints a series of thought provoking puzzle like images from the Christian belief of Creation. The poem predominantly uses the abundant metaphors as its medium for these illustrations of how the world came to be. The secondary medium Taylor uses to compliment his metaphors would be the rhetorical questions most of the poem is composed of. One such example is the line “Who held the Mold wherein the world was cast”.…

The very thought of describing such an object was intimidating to the narrator. This is clear when he says, “Say my life was being threatened by an insane guy who said I had to do it or else” (44). This fear is what led the narrator to begin describing, and to continue even when he knew his description was not making a clear picture in Robert’s mind. After a while, the narrator gives up, stating that cathedrals are not too important to him anyway. Robert had another idea in mind.…

I chose this sculpture to sketch mainly because of the characteristics of it. It is called “The Cathedral” by Rodin. One feature that stands out to me is that both of the two hands sprouting out are right hands. It is almost like they are praying, hence the name “The Cathedral.” It is a very detailed piece of art that I admire.…

The narrator displayed nothing but positive emotions towards the old man, yet he conceived the notion to murder him, which shows that he knew the difference between right and wrong. The narrator explains how cautious he was and how he crept into his room every night at midnight for seven days yet did not murder the old man because he did not see the "evil eye". At one point on the eighth night, the old man wakes up to a noise and sits up for an hour staring into the doorway to which the narrator is locked into a trance and does not move a muscle, most likely to prevent suspicion and possibly being caught. The narrator also shows his murderous arrogance by explaining to the audience that he would greet the old man every morning and ask him how his night passed, which shows the audience that he was conscious of his actions because he seemed to get gratification from the fear he was instilling in the old…

We often find ourselves disagreeing with those that mean so much to us over the smallest things. Raymond Carver write's, " Little Things" and portrays a real example of a couple in a disagreement with symbolism. The symbolism allows the reader to have a visual of people who are together that find some of the smallest things to argue about that turns into something much bigger. Carver does a good job of showing the repercussions when the smaller things get to someone rather than letting it go. Life becomes simpler when the arguing of simple, pointless things is reduced to a low amount.…

When I discovered that I would finally be able to travel abroad through Centre’s study abroad program I was beyond ecstatic. Due to basketball I really have never had the opportunity to go abroad, because if we were to we would end up missing parts of our season and I just skip parts of the season. However I had heard so many great stories from all my friends about their experiences and how the trips not only changed their lives but also changed their outlook on how different cultures live. A bunch of us decided that it would be a lot more fun if we went as a group as we would not only have more fun, but also come closer together as a team. We decided on the 3-week Strasbourg/Paris trip and the rest was history.…
