The Great Dream Though often marketed as a romantic story, The Great Gatsby was written as a commentary on the American dream and as a cautionary tale for those pursuing it. It shows that only those who are born into exceptional wealth are able to achieve it, while those from the lower class trying to attain it, such as the Wilsons or Gatsby, who work hard their whole life end up dead. Finally the Buchanans, born into wealth, who do achieve the dream it are disliked by all around them. So The ‘Great’ Gatsby who was not born rich but who worked so hard to appear such, falls short of dream, Nick leaves him watching over the Buchanan house after the termination of Daisy and Gatsby’s relationship at the plaza.…

In the novella Of Mice and Men written by John Steinbeck the main protagonist and his friend’s relationship reflect the lyrics of the song written by Lifehouse. When first introduced to the characters, the reader originally thinks that Lennie is dependent on George. In truth, George needs Lennie just as much to survive. To open, despite George constantly saying that he should have left Lennie a long time ago, he never does until the very end when he is forced by the circumstances. On page 11, George says: “‘ If I was alone, I could live so easy.…

George is regarded as a leader and paternal figure towards Lennie who is there to guide and protect him with his moral power. In the line: ‘they had walked in single file down the path”, we can see that Lennie is behind George following like a father and son. The reason I think that Steinbeck has used the phrase ‘single file’ is to create a visual image in the reader’s mind as they read to help them immediately imagine and have the precise perception of how the relationship between George and Lennie works. George was always the one in front who wanted to protect him and wants to be in control in other words: the leader, and Lennie: the follower. Additionally this signifies an unbalanced friendship, the opposite of what was mentioned in the…

There are many factors in George's early life that led to him being one not easily tempted by wrong. Growing up on the streets of Newark, NJ offered him many opportunities to succumb to the negative pressures of the ghetto. Had he grown up in a different home with different people, George would probably not be the man he is today, or even be at all. Children, under the wrong influences, can live carelessly, in which they are reckless with their lives, and in some unfortunate cases, lose them. This was not the case for George.…

George is bitter about the university 's president --- his own father-in-law --- thinking he is not good enough to move up in position in the History Department claiming that, "Georgie boy didn 't have the stuff…he wasn 't particularly…aggressive," (92-93). When Martha brings this situation up in front of Nick and Honey, George reacts violently and is near tears to show the depth of effect his failures have on him. Martha also struggles with her relationship with her husband, relying on cruel insults and humiliation to express her dissatisfaction with the disconnection she experiences with the man she loves or at least used to. She clearly hates who she has become and her dissatisfaction with herself leads her to be puzzled by George, "who tolerates, which is intolerable; who is kind, which is cruel; who understands, which is beyond comprehension" (202). This feeling is offset by the weary realization that their love is really no longer there and their marriage in pieces.…
