The Italian Renaissance was started in Florence for several different reasons. Florence was seen as a city which placed much importance on freedom and was focused on the individuals and their rights. Here individuals were given the right to participate in the government and the city was known for the liberty and respect of the people and the pride of being a Republic. The Renaissance really took place in the early years of the 15th century in Florence and this was referred to as the Early Renaissance. Then Italy was divided into numerous city – states and each of these had their own governments. The term renaissance is French for rebirth. This was truly and aptly kept for the period as this was a period of artistic openness, and openness
