On the eighteenth of January 1788, the first fleet arrived in Botany Bay, marking the beginning of a multicultural nation founded on migrants. Throughout Australia’s history migration has continued, with one of Australia’s largest migratory era’s occurring post World War two. This period saw some six million migrants arrive in Australia. These migrations however, were affected greatly by race biased policies. These policies included the white Australia policy and government assisted schemes aiming at create a white Australia.…
Rocco Corresca, a late 19th century Italian immigrant, moved to the United States after hearing promises that America bred opportunity and, “everybody was rich and that Italians went there and made plenty of money, so they could return to Italy and live in pleasure ever after”(immig. test.) Corresca’s ambition drove the decision to emigrate to America. This ambition for a better life appeared in Corresca’s description of the “house” owned by Corresca’s grandfather. “it was a dark cellar that he lived in and I did not like it at all.…
The main fear was in foreign people. This was due to the war and the amount of dead bodies, but mainly the fear that foreigners would take American jobs because of their willingness to accept lower wages. Also, many feared their new political ideas especially communism. In order to prevent the inevitable immigration, the United States passed laws that were specifically designed to reduce immigration numbers from foreign countries. The Immigration Quota Act of 1921 was one of the first passed to reduce immigration and it was probably the most effective.…
Unemployment and famine in Southern Europe, and overpopulation in Japan during the late nineteenth century, led millions of people to cross the Atlantic Ocean in search of a better life in Argentina or Brazil. During the closing decades of the nineteenth century, Europeans faced famine due to poverty, leading the first Italians to migrate to Argentina, where food was plentiful. The economic depression of northern Italy led millions of Italians to travel to South America in search for new jobs, creating an Economic boom during the 1880s. Italian immigration during 1880s was of about 64,000. However, this number increases to about 2.5 million immigrants to Argentina between 1880 and 1930.…
There was only a small group from port cities of Palermo and Napoli. By 1880 the number of Italian born in Philadelphia had risen to 1600. During this time we see the rise of mass migration and many laborers came to the US looking for work. Their love of…
Italians from Southern Italy emigrated to America because they faced poverty and starvation under rule from the Spanish monarchy. Almost ninety percent of Italian immigrants were from Southern Italy (Maggio, 2015). Eventually, the Spanish Monarch lost control of Southern Italy but Northern Italy took over control. Unfortunately, Northern control did not result in a better outcome for Southern Italians. They were still left in poverty because practically everything was taxed by Northern Italy.…
They originated mainly from the southern parts of Italy but had no specific area and all had poverty in common. New York was a major settlement area for the Italians as most of them wanted to deviate from farming jobs and live in urban areas. Poverty was the main component for the immigration to America from the Italians they primarily were farmers but lacked the tools to do it efficiently, hence why no money was being made and they were increasingly sinking into poverty. The money that was being made in America was enough for Italian to migrate for economic growth. According to author Molnar political issues were another driving force, “Starting in the 1870s the government took measures to repress political views such as anarchy and socialism.…
Every time you go to another country, especially for the first time, you get to experience what it is like to be part of a minority. The first time I walked into one of the classrooms at the Polytechnic of Turin, I sensed prejudice, from both the instructor and my classmates. After two years, only one of the instructors and about three of the students in my class acknowledged, introduced themselves, and offered to help me and two other foreign students. I felt the loneliness of being a hispanic student in Italy, and recognized the lack of fellowship among engineering students. By the end of the graduate program and without any special accommodations, I had worked twice as hard to take my final oral examinations in the Italian language and completed…
The Italian American Discourse Community During the past couple of weeks I have been observing the Italian discourse community, which I am apart of as my immediate family are Italian-Americans. Through the many observations, I have been able to grasp a better understanding on how distinct the Italian-American community is in comparison to the other communities around me. I examined the community Italian-American discourse community rigorously and I found many characteristics that make the Italian-American community so unique, such as their goals as a community and the many other aspects of their culture. Through this conscientious study I have been able to better understand the culture I am apart of and visualize it in a greater depth.…

For my research paper I want to get a better understanding of the treatment of Italian American immigrants during the time between the end of the nineteenth century up to around the time of the end of the Second World War, extending but beyond that if necessary. Through my initial research I've discovered that Italian Americans experienced large amounts of racial discrimination, stereotyping, and struggles of assimilation during this time. I want to understand why this discrimination occurred, and what changed to where Italians become a much more accepted group in the United States, even so much as earning the title of "white?" I'm interested to discover how Anti-Italian sentiment rose and feel in pre-war, wartime, and post-war America. I also want to understand how Italian Americans create a racial identity for themselves after they…
JOSEPH SHERMAN: A good essay, with an interesting thesis using Foucault’s theories to provide an understanding of social compliance in authoritarian systems. However, the main problem with the argumentation is the frequent lack of citations when summarizing main theories from secondary sources (i.e., Foucault’s name does not appear until p. 3 and this could be considered plagiarism): this problem is also a consequence of the lack of a sufficient number of secondary sources (just Resnais and Foucault). For your next written assignment, make sure you review the MLA style for citations and the Works Cited section (there are several mistakes), avoid repetition of concepts, and divide content in new paragraphs more frequently. The thesis is fascinating…
She speaks of how her son is a “strong American boy” (l 14), however the speaker follows this thought with how her son struggles with his identity as well. “Because I have seen his eyes redden when he is asked who he is/ because he answers I don’t know” (11 15-16). Although it may be assumed that he was born in America because he is considered an American boy, he still knows the struggle of his mother. He still feels the feeling of not belonging that comes immigration. As a mother, it would be a hard realization to know that your son is also struggling with something you hoped he never would have to when coming to a new…
Increasing amounts of Italians, mostly labor workers came to seek better economic opportunities during the 19th and 20th century. Most Italians settled…
I chose to immerse myself into the Italian culture. Choosing this culture was not difficult because I am, according to AncestryDNA, 75% Italian and would love to learn more about where I come from. The only exposure that I have gotten in relation to the culture was when I traveled to Italy in June of 2017 and by living at home with my extended Italian family. After extensive research, I learned a hefty amount of information on Italian culture.…
