Italian Figure Skating Essay

During my first three years of learning Italian, I unfortunately did not get a chance to use my Italian outside of the classroom. Although both my grandfather and father are Italian, since my grandfather had immigrated to the United States as a child, he only knew bits and pieces - not enough to have a conversation - so although I have Italian blood, I never knew any of the language until I entered high school.
This past year, I finally got my chance. I am a competitive figure skater. Unlike much of the figure skating shown on tv, I compete on a synchronized figure skating team, where 16 skaters compete together. In a sense, it is like synchronized swimming. However, during my first practice only hours after landing in Croatia, I noticed the Italian flag up on the wall, along with a banner that read: Team Hot Shivers. I barely saw this team around the competition rink, but at the end of major competitions there is a competitors party to celebrate our hard work during the season. This is where I got to meet members from Team Hot Shivers. My first interaction with them was confusing as the music at the party was extremely loud, but as the night went on and the party died down, we were able to actually have a conversation. This was when we were able to chat about our teams and our sport together. Since we had recently reviewed the conditional conjugation in class, I was able to ask “would it be okay if we took a picture”. Although I had trusted that I had learned a significant amount of Italian in the last four years, this moment was a good example as to how much I had truly learned. I could speak to native Italians without

As we drove closer and closer to Duluth the team we were playing that day was the talking point in the car. The Omaha Tropics were who we were facing first of four possible games in the tournament. They were the heavy favorite to win with the reason being because they used this tournament as a tryout team for their winter team. That meant they brought a hefty amount of very skilled players to this tournament all giving one-hundred percent effort skating for a spot on their winter team in Omaha. Not to mention, their team is mostly the same players every year, so in reality seventy-five percent of these kids played together all year long.…

We stumbled one by one onto the ice. the cold air immediately stung my cheeks and numbed my toes. The other players were warming up; effortlessly weaving through cones and performing crossovers with such ease that it looked as if they were dancing the waltz in a ballroom, swiftly gliding back and forth, making sharp and precise turns, before lining up to practice shooting. A wrist shot, a snapshot, a slapshot a -the nets not over there -shot. In the locker room, everyone boasted to each other; “five goals seven assists.”…

The Lesson in Quitting For the past 7 years of my life, swimming has played a huge role. Growing up, I had always enjoyed being in the water, and was one of the odd kids that genuinely enjoyed swimming lessons, no bribes required (thinking about it, I wish I had some of those kids in the lessons I teach now). Overtime, it began to feel less like a passion and more like an obligation; something I had committed to that was too late to stop. I was afraid to quit, afraid to disappoint, and trying to be dedicated to a sport I had lost interest in made me start to hate it. This year, I finally decided to drop the sport, and am now embracing the huge change it has had in my life.…
