In the previous chapter we learned about the Gothic style, so to combine chapter twelve and thirteen together we are going to see the difference in Italian Cistercians with French Gothic cathedrals. For the main difference between the two styles is that Italian Cistercians typically had a single long nave and small windows which lead to a large amount of wall space which can be seen in figure 13.1 of the Basilica of San Francesco. Another feature these architecture structure put in place to make the wall space more prominent was to eliminate lower side aisles along the nave. In time, with some changes the nave began to be more broad like figure 13.5 of the plan of Santa Croce unlike the figure 12,8 of a French Gothic cathedral of Notre-Dame. In contrast French Gothic cathedrals had vaulted ceilings and pointed arches as a main decoration and their structure was in unison as a whole. The Italian Cistercians switched to tall towers that were a part of the façade but was considered a separate structure from the church.
