Personal Narrative: It's Worth A Thousand Words

“It’s just like painting a picture.” These 6 words by themselves may have no significance; however, when put together they can mean anything. These 6 words had a great impact on me. At first, a fog covered these words, and I was unaware of the weight that this sentence carried. However, one day this fog was lifted and I was finally able to uncover the concealed meaning behind these inspirational words.
My mom was always willing to help me; even in times of great frustration, she was there. Specifically, I remember one day when I was doing my creative writing journal in 3rd grade, she said to me,”It’s just like painting a picture. Just describe what you see going on outside.” Snottily, I answered her, “It’s snowing. There’s a bird over there.”

What color are they? What are they saying?”
“Saying? What the heck do you mean saying?” I said in a bratty tone. Looking back now, I can see that I was clearly being too literal and thinking inside the box, which is another thing my mom said to me often, but that is another essay.
“What I’m saying is, be creative, if the bird could talk what would it be saying.”
Now, you could imagine my frustration since I was such a literal thinker and I didn’t really believe in made up things like other kids. I never thought of things like this; I thought that a bird was a bird and it flew around.
“Uh, I don’t know, maybe there is a lot of snow?”
“Good! That’s better!” my mom said encouragingly. She then proceeded to help me describe all the other things I saw outside. Feeling a sense of accomplishment, I packed my notebook up and put it in my backpack, eager to show my teacher, Mrs. Haas, the next day in

I went home that night yearning to see my teacher’s praise for my excellent writing. The next day, Mrs. Haas handed back my journal where a sinister “S” stared into my soul along with a comment: “Writing was better. You can do better. See me!” I was crushed. Feelings of discouragement swept over me. My blood, sweat, and tears went into that journal and all I get from her is, “I think you can do better.” Mrs. Haas told me that I should incorporate similes, metaphors, and personification in my next assignment. She also told me something that still sticks with me today: “show, don’t tell.” Today, I now realize that my writings before this were extremely boring since I merely told my audience what was happening instead of showing them through figurative language and my 5

The narrator opened the door a second time when the bird flew in, “Perched upon a bust of Pallas just above my chamber door— / Perched, and sat, and nothing more.” The bird acted like a normal bird, he did not look different from any other bird, he was just a normal bird, nothing to make him seem imaginary. It can also be easy to believe that the bird was real because the narrator did not act out of the ordinary when the bird showed up, “Straight I wheeled a cushioned seat in front of bird, and bust, and door;” He strangely looked at the bird but never acted out of the ordinary until he realized the bird was a figment of his imagination. This poem made it difficult to pick a side on whether the dark-colored bird was real or if it was being made up by the narrator.…

They only had a canary that would sing in the same way Minnie Wright did back when she was young. Her neighbor Mrs. Hale stated “if there’d been years and years of nothing then a bird to sing to you, it would be awful—still, after the bird was still” (992). For example, this quote illustrates that her life changed after her bird was killed because it was the most important thing in her life since she didn’t have any children to look after. Her bird was…

We walked home, with crinkly, thin, plastic bags in hand, chattering like the bird that my friends and I had discovered just a few hours before. He was so small, tiny enough I could carry him in the palm of our hands when we went from house, to house, in order to find a safe place to keep him. The soft feathers that covered the chick’s scrawny frame stuck out in a disorderly manner, especially the antenna of a feather on the top of his tiny head. Soft cream covered feathers, with lines of cocoa speckles covered him, similar to a foamy cinnamon coffee.…
