Through out the short story “It Was a Different Day When They Killed The Pig” the author portrays many literary devices to make the reader understand what the character, Alioso, is feeling and having to go through when finding out they are going to kill his sow Noca and eat her after. One of the literary devices that this author used the best to represent this short story and send a message is theme. The theme of this story is man hood, which was what Aloisio had to grow into in order to make his father happy and also grow up from a boy to a man to be able to take in the pain of seeing his pig killed. This is usually around the age of 12 or 13 when you already have to start acting mature and not like a child. You have to leave your child hood being and become a man. Some times facing hard situations can help you become a man faster. This is something that fathers want the most in their son and what they hope comes fast. They also teach them how guys and girl the different in the view that only girls cry. This idea of the usual latin house hold is also seen here in the short story which we see Aloisio’s dad trying to do with his son.A loisio’s dad wants Aloisio to show him that he is not a kid and that he can take the pain that he is holding in his heart. He tried to change his face to make it look like he was alright and that it was something normal to see a pig being killed. He wanted to have an expression that would be normal to have as the commented on the killing of the sow. He was doing this to please his father which was the goal through out the whole short story. He was kind of bothered that he wasn't able to take this killing more better and not have thrown up, but he knew that for the next killing he would be better but he was unsure if he would go back to the same spot. This is a great way for him to think because he is accepting everything and even trying to do better the next time around. He wants to be mature and reach man hood because he knows it is time for him to leave his kid mentality and let go of his child hood along with the killing. He knew his father was happy with him after he came out of the bathroom and saw his father and mother talking about how Aloisio behaved fine during the killing.
