Expressionism In Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night

Starry Night was painted by a post-impressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh in the late 19th century. It is one of Van Gogh’s best known paintings and it is hanged in the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Van Gogh completed more than 2,100 works and he was notable for his beautiful and delicate paintings. The use of color, vehement brushwork and the silhouetted form of his work greatly influenced Expressionism in modern art. One of his greatest artwork, The Starry Night brought him to an opening of fame and glory and it is perhaps the most famous of his artworks and yet the most elusive one. “This morning I saw the countryside from my window a long time before sunrise, with nothing but the morning star, which looked very big,” he wrote to his brother Theo. He used yellow and white to create a spiral effect to the bright moon and the shining stars. The buildings around the steeple is composed in small blocks of oranges, yellows and greens. The little houses seem pretty quiet and it illustrate that the lights are on and everybody’s asleep. The sleepy village also represents the rest of the world because it was painted far from the foreground in the overwhelming night sky with swirling and flowing lines. Overall, the starry night is portrayed with dark colors and the man light sources are the shining stars and the crescent moon.
