Issues Facing Diversity In The Workplace Today

Kyurstina, your discussion board addressed a lot of the issues facing diversity in the workplace today. I especially enjoyed the section which discussed the age difference between employees. One of my favorite classes that I have taken through Liberty spent a lot of time discussing the generation gap between employees. In order to fully understand it, one must understand the mindset of the eras. Some of the strategies to study and understand will be sending managers and people in charge of their companies to classes. Introduction When employees seek employment, they do so with the intent of performing well at their jobs, getting paid appropriately for their performance, and with the understanding that if they have a need that arises, their employer will try to accommodate them as best possible, if they have the means to do so. With a diverse workforce, religion and disability are two categories that will always vary among employees and how the company meets those needs. Companies are very diverse and with diversity come differences that everyone within the company must be aware of in order to be professional and respectful to everyone as not to offend anyone. Organizations have to create workplace adjustments in order to create a productive environment for all employees, regardless of their generation (Kapoor & Solomon, 2011). The employers must identify the different characteristics of each generation in the workplace, promote a work environment that helps the productivity of each generation, and provide their employees with the required information and skills to understand the generational characteristics of their colleagues, to create understanding among employees. Other solutions also include mentor programs, trainings on generational diversity, and improved communication methods designed to cater to the preferences of each generation (Bennett et al., 2012). According to Kapoor & Solomon (2011), “Generational differences impact communication styles, technology needs, professional development preferences, workplace expectations, compensation and benefits needs, desired leadership styles and the effectiveness of reward and recognition…

Are issues of diversity understood/represented fairly, realistically, accurately or problematically? The socio culture influences that impact students, teachers, schools and the community has changed immensely over the years due the exposure and availability to resources and technology readily available. Realistically schools need to keep up to date with these changes in order to support students, teachers and the community. Over the summer I started a lawn care business with the help of my friends so I could make a bit of cash. Before we knew it we had quite the big operation on our hands and people all over our town were depending on us to maintain their yards and keep them looking beautiful. All was smooth sailing until I came to the sudden realization that soon my buddies and I were going to have to be going back to school soon, and these people still needed somebody to depend on. With school, band, and other devotions soon to be taking up the majority of my time, I needed to find workers quick before the school year started. Still being a high school student, of course most of my connections were also in school with me, so I was going to have to look elsewhere for hard working individuals to help me keep the business running strong.…

I believe that I will be successful in working, cooperating, and excelling with leaders, peers, and subordinates of different gender, color, ethnicity, and/or religion primarily due to my upbringing. From birth, diversity has surrounded me. With a Caucasian father and a Dominican mother, I have been indoctrinated into unique cultures and ways of life from an early age. The location in which I grew up, the New York Metropolitan Area, also significantly contributed to my ability to appreciate and cooperate with those who are different from me by allowing exposure to individuals from every country, ethnicity, religion, and walk of life, and instilled within me a deep respect and willingness to work with those who I may perceive to be different.…
