Israelites’ Military Campaign in the Levant In both, Joshua chapters 10 and 11 and Judges chapter 1, Israelite armies battle to gain control of land in the Levant. However, each story’s military campaign was a bit different. In Joshua, YHWH helped the army immensely, the army battled in accordance with YHWH, and fought with brutality. In Judges, the army didn’t get as much assistance from YHWH, they didn’t fulfill all of YHWH’s commands, and they used less force and more negotiation in battle. Throughout the chapters 10 and 11 of Joshua, YHWH provided Joshua and his army with plenty of assistance, allowing them to gain control of many cities in the southern part of the Levant. So, throughout chapters 10 and 11 of Joshua, YHWH instructs the army, and Joshua orders his troops in accordance with His commands. After YHWH acted on words spoken by Joshua, Joshua ordered his troops to harass the enemy and make sure they don’t make it back to their towns because YHWH delivered them in to their hands (10:19). They couldn’t let YHWH down after He helped them so greatly. Then, Joshua orders his warriors to put their feet on the enemy kings’ necks, because that’s what the lord would do to their enemies anytime they’re at war (10:25). At the end of chapter 10, Joshua’s accomplishments are listed and the narrator adds “as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded (10:40).” The narrator adds several similar remarks in chapter 11 (vv. 9, 12, 15, 23). YHWH replied and told them that the tribe of Judah must go first, and He delivered the land to them (Judges 1:1-2). Later in chapter 1, the narrator mentions that God was with them (vv.19, 22), but YHWH isn’t as involved in their battles as He was in Joshua. He may have delivered land to them like he did in Joshua, but in Judges he doesn’t directly kill any enemies or halt the sun in order to help the soldiers.
