Our Frustrations

1. Budget
I know the number one area of frustration for us has been our budget. One reason we need this transition is the opportunity focus 100% on bring our budget so where ever we land we are on task for our marriage, our family, and the ministry.

2. Isolation
The last five years have been difficult. As our girls have grown older,

The Presence
Through all the ups and downs of life and ministry knowing that God has always been present with our family has always been a source of hope. Whether it was working through Grace's medical issues or have a car die on the side of the road, God has always shown himself present in our lives and has provided the peace or financial resources to overcome every obstacle. Multiple times we have rehearsed God's faithful to one another and others much like David did before facing Goliath.

2. Healthy Family
Recently, a teacher assigned Evelyn’s class to write about someone who inspired them. About half way through this assignment, I came home after a men’s group and found a piece of paper taped to the living room wall with Evelyn's points for her paper. She and Jane had kept it a secret that Evelyn had chosen to write about me. With students growing up in broken or unhealthy homes, having a healthy family to share with students provides a sense of accomplishment and hope in our

In the last 8 months, God has given us inroads into the international community at UTA than we had since I came to UTA. Beyond our weekly international dinners, both Jane and I have made connections with internationals personally where God leads the conversation back to him. In two weeks, we will host Thanksgiving at our home for at least a dozen international friends.

2. Mentoring / Counseling
Both Jane and I thrive in one on one and small group settings. The opportunity to empower new believers or young leaders to reach their full potential or to walk with pre-Christians and answer questions that bring them to a point of decision is energizing.

3. Spiritual Discernment and Words of Wisdom
Jane and I try to work as a team as much as possible. We recognize how God has blessed us with mutually beneficial gifts both socially and spiritually. Even after 17 years of ministry together and 15 years of marriage, I am still amazed by the detail God reveals to Jane as she prays for others. She has woken up, numerous times, in the night to pray for a student or friend and, the next day, there is a Facebook post about a need in their lives. God speaks to me through words of encouragement or wisdom as I pray with people personally. Sometimes, this can be specific or a general idea that makes sense to them even if it is unclear to me. We especially enjoy opportunities to pray for people as a team

Give examples of how the practice of ministry has affected your experience and understanding of A) God At the core of my understanding of God is a God of love in covenantal relationship with God’s children. Romans 8:38-39 says it well; “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” The practice of ministry has only proven to strengthen that belief. I was called early Saturday morning to sit with a family who had just learned of the death of their daughter/granddaughter in a vehicle accident.…

The book Transitions: Leading Churches through Change, editor David Mosser compiles a collection of writings, be it academic essays or sermons, focused on assisting leaders of congregations experiencing change. This is a rare read for me, as in my thirteen years of ministry and Church leadership I have mostly encountered literature regarding change within organizations from a business perspective rather than a church point of view. To my delight, the contributors of this book offer an experienced perspective on change and transition in Community of Faith organizations. Several authors offer intrinsic counsel on addressing and enduring apprehension generating state of affairs. In Part 1: “The Clergy in Chaos,” a Case study entitled Poetry in…

Leadership on the line by Ronald A. Heifetz and Marty Linksys is a very timely book. Maggie’s description of her Indian community and the effects of alcohol made me think of many urban communities and the pain that lurks in those communities. The stories she shares about Lois and the heart she had for her community and desire to make it better make you think we need more leaders like that. Lois leadership inspired me because she saw something wrong in her community she believed she could bring change. Lois is a good picture of servanthood she doesn’t sit and think someone should so something…

Lastly, love can blind one into a trance of different types of isolation that is hard to escape once one has entered. Even though love is great, it can be difficult to understand and think about when so much pain has been endured. Fredrickson states, “In countless social exchanges each day, your potential to alleviate loneliness with love is enormous” (121). The author is trying to say that even though love is in one’s presence, it can be a little too quick to realize that chances are being alone can happen rather quickly. If loneliness comes, it is hard for an individual to overcome and the process of where the brain and body has been affected can cause a detrimental shock to the person.…
