Biography
S. ureae is a coccus, gram-positive, endospore-forming, chemoorganotrophic, obligate aerobe and has motility via flagella. (Sporosarcine, 2006). It is typically found in soils at the bases of trees where dogs have urinated, and has also been found in manure (Dworkin, Falkow, Rosenberg, Schleifer, & Stackebrandt, 2006). It is likely that if you have a dog, you have probably come in contact with this microbe at some point in your life. Although this organism is usually found in soil, it was not found in certain soils like that of deserts, forests, or grazing lands (Pregerson, 1973). One theory for the differences in habitat is the microbe’s nutritional requirements (Pregerson, …show more content…
ureae has also shown effective at degrading pesticides when applied during certain weather conditions. (Mujeeb, Riaz, Muschtaq, Abbasi, & Ali, 2012). They do this by metabolizing the ingredients that make up the pesticides and returning them to a more simple form. (Mujeeb et al. 2012) This process works best at a slightly neutral to basic pH level and between 30 and 42 degrees Celcius (Mujeeb et al. 2012). The use of microbes to degrade pesticides could be a positive or negative factor. Overuse of pesticides can be a problem for our environment and microbes like this one can be used to help clean up the contaminated soil. On the other hand, without pesticides, some crops can be overrun by pests. S. ureae certainly has it’s use in agriculture as long as the right balance can be
