Writers often highlight the values of a culture or a society by using characters who are alienated from that culture or society. This can be seen in Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men because of George’s beliefs and Lennie’s social class. George and Lennie are both judged by society due to their limitations. Another example of alienation used to highlight the values of a society is revealed in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Lee uses her novel to show how society can find it acceptable to alienate a group of people once they are othered and not thought of as humans.…

She is described as dressed in all red, with “rouged lips”, “red mules” and “red ostrich feathers”, the colour symbolism of the colour red adds to the idea that she’s a danger to the men. Curley’s Wife plays a major part to the theme of loneliness. She’s a woman who is always heavily made up, with her hair in sausage curls along with wearing clothes that isn’t fit for a ranch. Many of the characters in the novel would talk badly about her, calling her a tart, jail bait, and trouble maker. The only reason that she is talked badly about, is because she is always trying to flirt with any man in the ranch, and the men of the ranch don’t want any problems with Curly, they try to ignore her, but many of them take it the wrong way, she is only trying to find someone to talk to, because she is lonely up in the house, with Curley not even giving her any attention.…

John Steinbeck’s novel, Of Mice and Men, follows two traveling ranch workers, George and Lennie, as they begin a new round of employment along side many other men. The small California town where they find work, Soledad, is Spanish for “solitary.” This allusion illustrates the common state of confinement that each character finds his or herself in at some point during the novella. Often, this confinement is self inflicted by the characters to defend themselves, but other forms of defence are demonstrated as well. Through the characterization of the individuals in Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck explores the ways humans tend to defend themselves against judgement when they feel they are the minority of a larger population.…

Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men shows that the misery of the Great Depression ultimately led to discrimination directed to women, African Americans, and the mentally challenged.…
