Island Harvest Donation Paper

I felt really good to have made a contribution to the community. Just walking in to the office made me feel good. The people inside were welcoming. They didn’t hesitate and they came right away to take my donation. It felt even better that I chose a great and big organization like Island Harvest because they are the largest hunger relief organization on Long Island. Between 2013 and 2014, Island Harvest collected and distributed approximately 22 million pounds of food and products, which provided 18 million meals to people in need. I’m hoping with my donation the numbers will be even bigger by the end of this year. I feel as though I helped to make a difference because this organization relies on volunteers, in-kind services, and donated food

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

We were able to prepare donations for distribution to over 600 non-profit agencies in metro Atlanta and North Georgia area. I worked together with other volunteers in order to sort, inspect and pack quality groceries. Being part of the community I believe that is is essential for one to become more aware of how serious the food issue is in Atlanta inner cities. I have a better thankfulness of everyone who is involved with the Atlanta food bank because they…

For our civic engagement project for the Redefining Leadership class, my group, Stephanie, Hailee, Christina, and I, decided to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House in New Haven, Connecticut on a Thursday. Before we got there, we did not know what to expect, but afterwards, we truly felt grateful that we helped out a great cause. The Ronald McDonald House is a charity house that keeps families close to their family members that are being treated at a nearby hospital. We spoke with someone who works at the House and she told us that eight families were there on that day. We were able to see some people and did what we could to help out.…

As a member of the Inside Ride Organizing Committee at Mentor College, I assisted to organize, advertise and execute the 2015 Inside Ride cycling event that raised over $50,000 for childhood cancer patients and advancing research. The Inside Ride is an annual fundraising event that my school, Mentor College, has every year in memory of a student who passed away battling cancer in 2010. Having known that student, I felt a deeper connection to the cause and and joined this committee to help raise awareness for childhood cancer and contribute to the success of this event. The event took several months of planning to ensure that everything would run smoothly. I was a part of the fundraising subcommittee, in which my role was to organize the paperwork required for the event and count the money prior to the event.…

Kindness is defined as having the quality to be generous, friendly, and considerate. Being kind to someone, and even yourself shows that you are driving a positive vibe into each other’s lives. Being kind can be difficult in certain situations, but sometimes it is necessary in order to be the “bigger person”. However, kindness is a win-win for both people, the one showing kindness, and the one receiving kindness. Some may argue that in today’s society, kindness is dying away, because of the recent tragic and controversial topics.…

It was special to see just the sheer amount of people who had come out to volunteer on that Saturday. If you think about, they could’ve been doing anything on that Saturday morning. Yet, they decided to help give back to their community.…
