Islamophobia In The United States

Improved Essays
Majority of the time when Islam is seen on the news, it is never for a good reason. Headlines read Islamic extremist this or Islamic radical that. A number of Americans view the religion as dangerous and different. Muslims who have no terrorist connections are being surveillanced and prosecuted just because of their religion. Islam is a peaceful religion; it’s just misunderstood due to lack of knowledge within the American population. Muslims are often linked to the terrorists that caused 9/11. Osama Bin Laden the leader of Al-Qaeda and his followers are Muslim. September 11, 2001 is what caused Islamophobia throughout the United States. Many Muslims received hostility and were discriminated because they were linked to terrorists by religion. …show more content…
When the justice systems look into terrorists they immediately look into Muslims. Muslims aren’t the only victims of stereotypes. The African American population receive discrimination from the the criminal justice system like with the situation going on in Ferguson. What African American goes through is exactly what Muslim goes through. They both have to fight stereotypes. After 9/11 a man named Farouk Ali-Haimoud was wrongly accused of being a terrorists. He had nothing to do with 9/11 but he was in jail for 15 months. There is no doubt that Ali-Haimoud’s experiences has everything to do with the fact that he’s Muslim. Instances like this represent discrimination in the justice system and cultural bias against Islam (Elawawadh …show more content…
Philip Jenkins, a history professor at Baylor University's Institute for Studies of Religion, states that shockingly “the Islamic scriptures in the Quran were actually far less bloody and less violent than those in the Bible”. He also says that violence in the Quran was mostly self defense (Hagerty 6-9). Yes, there are radical Islamic extremists in the world and yes, there are Muslims out there who are truly evil. The world population is just over 7 billion; 1.6 billion of them are Muslim. Out of 1.6 billion people there are bound to be a few bad apples. Do not let a small fraction of Muslims define Muslims as a whole. In every religion there are extremists who use religion to justify their actions. For example Buddhism is known for being the most peaceful religion, but there are violent extremists all over Asia in places like in Myanmar (Uzayr 1). Islam is generalized too much. When there is a problem in a country where the majority of the population is Muslim people label that as an Islamic problem. In Saudi Arabia women are given no rights so it is said to be an Islamic problem instead of an Saudi Arabian problem. In Russia there are no gay rights, but that is not a Christianity problem. That’s an Russian issue. It is incorrect to generalize a religion based on issues going on in a certain

When someone hears the word Arabs or Islam post 9/11 in America, there wasn’t any sense of danger towards Muslims. Unlike today when the media brings up the religion of Islam, automatically non Muslims think the worst of us. There has become fear to see a man having a full bread, or a woman in hijab. Usually this fear comes from people who know absolutely nothing about this religion and who don’t understand it. I believe that the American press has a big influence on how the country views Muslims and things are only getting worse.…

Islam was the main topic for debate when it came to the attacks, and it still is. Millions of Muslims were blamed for the attacks. In the article, “One Tweet Explains Why You Should Never Blame All Muslims For Terrorism” by John Haltiwanger, he shows numerous tweets of people putting the blame on Muslims and their religion; arguing that it is the religion that teaches them to be violent. That is not the case, Haltiwanger says, “But even if ISIS, or another organization linked to Islamic extremism, ends up claiming responsibility for the attacks it doesn’t mean the rest of the world’s Muslims are complicit.” (Haltiwanger 6).…

The radical-Islamic terrorist groups are primarily located in the Middle East with the Taliban in Afghanistan. Afghanistan has one of the lowest literacy rates in the world at 38.2% which one of the reasons terrorism thrives there (“Literacy”). The Taliban teaches the children at young ages what the Quran means and how the stories contained inside of it reflect their values. The teachers who are supposed to help them understand the meaning are illiterate themselves, know only what the Quran says by what the Taliban tells them (Soherwordi et al 348). By teaching the lesson of the Pharaohs, changing the meaning of the jihad, and ignoring the Caliphate, they instill while the children are still young what their god instructing them to do.…

Currently, I work as a researcher and policy planner for Presidential candidate, Bernie Sanders. My job is informing him on the brief historical chronology leading to present day extremism, providing him with clear advice for how to differentiate between groups and their perspectives, supply him with points that he can use in a debate to refute some of the fear and hate-mongering statements made by others, as well as give him effective suggestions for how to confront Global Jihadism in ways including and beyond military. As his secondhand, I would allow Bernie to introduce the topic as such: “My fellow Americans -- tonight, I want to speak to you about what the United States will do with our friends and allies to degrade and combat the current…
