On September 11th, 2001, four separate attacks on the United States were coordinated and carried out by an Islamic extremist terrorist group known as al-Qaeda. Four planes were hijacked by 19 different terrorists, with two of the planes flying into both buildings of the World Trade Center in New York City, one plane flying into the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and the final plane crashing in a field in Pennsylvania. The attacks followed a growing unrest towards the western world and the USA among groups in the nation of Islam that began in the early 20th century. Bin Laden then justifies attacks on the US, stating that, “it is commanded by our religion and intellect that the oppressed have a right to return the aggression”(The Guardian). In his letter, bin Laden blames all American people for the “atrocities” committed on the nation of Islam: “The American people are the ones who pay the taxes which fund the planes that bomb [Muslims] in Afghanistan and the tanks that strike and destroy [Muslim] homes in Palestine,” he starts. He continues to accuse the American people of making up, “the armies which occupy [Muslim] lands in the Arabian Gulf, and the fleets which ensure the blockade of Iraq.” Bin Laden is saying that the terrorist attacks committed by al-Qaeda are in response, on behalf of the nation of Islam, to western and American participation in the oppression and attacking of Muslim people.
