I had no idea what the book titled A History of Islam in The America by Kambiz GhaneaBassiri was about and I would not be able to guess. However, after spending five weeks in this class, now I have a clue what is it about. In past, I just examine a cover a book and predict what it will be about. These are just details that I do not take the time to reflect upon. After talking with my professor, it really taught me how to pay attention to the obvious. In short, my paper will focus on the struggles I faced when I was reading the book. I will discuss some of the question raised during class discussion, the part of the reading that stood out the most to me, the reason why the author did mention women and some of the shocking things

I have no idea what some of the words mean and because of this reason, I found it hard to follow along. Additionally, he provides so much information at once and some of the phrases are very lengthy. Moreover, they are certain information, I feel, is not unnecessary to provide. For instance, he mentions certain people in the text and never mentioned then again later on. Consequently, he also talks about certain events that has nothing to do with Islam or Muslims in the text. I know a historian’s job is to provide as much information as needed. However, it would be better to focus on one particular topic which would help the readers, like myself, to understand the main points. This way the readers will remember more what the author talked about. It is better to examine one thing and know piece by piece on that thing rather than merely feeding from information. Despite the fact that the text being wordy for me, however, I was able to understand some part of the …show more content…
Maybe the reason could be women were not involved in these events. Plus there was a small portion of women migrated during this period as the author indicates in the text. Moreover, I like the fact that he provides these statistical analyses because it gives me an understanding of how many Muslims males and women migrated during this period. This appeal more to readers because it gives them reason to trust his work. The down side of is that why bring up females in data if so far, he did not mention nowhere in the text? It just unnecessary as some might argue.
Lastly, it is astonishing when the author mentions about some Muslims considering themselves as being the Prophets. I had no idea this part of the history exited In Islam. Especially knowing that Islam warns its followers from doing such disgraces, but then again we are all human beings and sometimes we take advantage of the vulnerable people. Particularly, when we know that we gain benefit from it. The author made me to want to learn more about this side of the history. Could be more of this part of the history

Many Muslims do not recognize many hadiths because they feel they do not represent the word of Allah. Some Hadiths state that there are grand rewards for any Muslim who dies in honor of Allah. The famous 72 virgins in heaven as a reward comes from a Hadith that is not recognized by most Islamic groups, but used to recruit for suicide mission of radical Islam sects. My first article I believe is the best article of my three because it has a perspective that many people do not even notice. When people think of Islam they think of a country that is entirely filled with Muslims and the Government is also controlled by Muslims.…

Well, in this situation, it teaches me that even a legend person like Malcolm X are once easily distorted by the words of the people around him. Compared to whom we are now, as Muslim that has little knowledge about Islam, we are also easily distorted by words that others said. Therefore, we should gain more knowledge and used it when people started to put us down. Besides, from this Malcolm X situation, it teaches me that, a human should not let his or her life been ruled by others. It means here, nobody shall affects our passion, interest in doing something.…

Written by Syed Hossein Nasr in January 1965, this book of ‘Ideals and Realities of Islam’ comprises of six main chapters. In general, the gist of this book is to clear things up regarding Islam. During the particular time the book is wrote, many of the Westerners came out with critiques and their own point of view regarding Islam without deeply understanding the religion which then somehow affected the young Muslims to lose their spiritual balance and feel estranged from their own tradition. The author as well tried to answer in many cases, the charges made by Western works against Islam especially as it concerned such fundamental elements of the faith as the Al-Quran and the hadith. In the same time, the author presented the point of view…

Likewise, what Barack Obama mentioned in his speech to convey his argument is what most of us could have agreed 100% because I believe that there is no religion who accepts the killing of innocent people. In addition, according to ABC News, Abdullah of Saudi Arabia used pathos to convey his argument when he said, “Muslims are not bloodthirsty people. Islam is a religion of peace that forbids the killing of the innocent. Islam also accepts the Prophets, whether those prophets are Mohammed, God's peace and blessing be upon Him, or Moses or the other prophets of the Books.” This shows that most Muslim people are just following their religion’s regulations, which refuses to allow killing people. When Donald Trump said Muslims are terrorists…

The Quran says “(41:33-34) And good and evil deeds are not alike. Repel evil with good. And he who is your enemy will become your dearest friend.” In other words the Quran says good and evil deeds are total opposites and that we should make our enemies our friends through peace and not hatred or war (Cpsglobal.org). Some Muslims might ignore this verse just like some Christians ignore most of the Old Testament, but we cannot depict the radical Muslims as the main stream Muslims. We as a society are so fast to make assumptions on things we do not understand; it is something that we need to…

(al Imran, 3:64) They note that even those outside this special category of “people of the book” are to be treated with kindness and justice. They quote this verse: And He does not forbid you to deal kindly and justly with anyone who has not fought you for your faith or driven you out of your homes: God loves the just. (al Mumtahana, 60:8) Similar points can also be seen in many works on the subject of dialogue in Islam, in some cases with a different approach. In Interfaith Dialogue: A Guide for Muslims, Muhammad Shafiq and Mohammed Abu-Nimer argue that the Quran supports interfaith dialogue by showing how the key ideas in interfaith dialogue are contained in the Quran. One of these is the concept of Ta’aruf.…

In order to move forward people cannot deny the problem is serious and requires equal level of seriousness and critiquing. I suppose after a while people become desensitized and it is easiest to turn a blind eye. So it is important to disrupt Islamophobia while it is happening. A possible way to do this is by starting a conversation with a Muslim person in order to deflect the attackers words. This will show the other person that not everyone thinks like them.…

Jewish religion is believed to have been corrupted and since Islam main ideas are from it then it can be said that it may not be as perfect because its main ideas are from the same religion that was seen as corrupted. There are possibilities of imperfect texts in the holy book Qur’an; this is because many of the texts cannot be rationally proven as one depends on the authority of the author and also a lot of editing may tamper therefore hard to theologically defend the fact that the Qur’an is perfect (Hitchens,…

Initially before reading the book, I expected and predicted that the book would be a typical book written by many Muslim reverts where they would just describe their experience before and after becoming a Muslim. However, as I read the preface which is a habit in order to know the writer’s purpose and set my own intention of the book, I knew that Jeffrey Lang is not typical reverts. The book answers my questions, argues my existing principals and promotes me into thinking deeper about experience of being a Muslim and how non Muslims perceive Islam. Thus, this reflection will talk about experience with the Holy Quran and Hadith, interaction with non Muslims, concept of ummah and Palestine. These points will be related to author’s explanations, descriptions, experiences and also my own opinion.…
