Islam is one of the largest monotheistic religions in the world. A religion of peace, it is practiced by over “1.6 billion people around the world” (Lipka) and dominant in 50 countries (Wikipedia)no wikipedia. The word Islam means submission or surrender; however, it was derived from the root word “Salam”. Unfortunately, the message of Islam has been distorted by acts of violent radicalism. Good sentence!. Radical extremists who use the religion of Islam as a weapon of war against non-Muslims, have corrupted the message Islam tries to send out. These radicals are the minority and are not what Islam tries to portray. Vandals smashed windows and spray painted the words “Go Home” on the walls of the mosque (DInshaw). Shortly after, another act of Islamophobia occurred on December 3, 2015 in Calgary. Not long after the vandalism on the Cold Lake mosque, Calgary transit the Tuscany LRT station was also defaced and vandalized with racist graffiti saying “Kill the Musilums”, alongside symbols of white supremacy (Farooq). Police later described the incident as a hate crime, and two men were later charged with public mischief (Farooq). Calgary doctor, Dr. Ameer Farooq's believes that this is the same hate Nazi’s exposed towards the Jews and that ISIS exposes to the Western countries. Dr. Farooq fears his wife would be harassed or assaulted if she goes out into the public because of her hijab (Farooq).Unfortunately, due to these radical extremists, Muslim women who wear religious headgear have become targets of Islamophobia. …show more content…
The United States, England, and France are examples of countries who have been targets of Muslim extremist groups. On September 11 2001, the United States suffered a series of terrorist attacks led by the Islamic terrorist group Al-Qaeda. These attacks consisted of the hijackings of U.S airlines and suicide attacks on symbolic U.S landmarks. These attacks resulted in the collapsing of the World Trade Centers which killed more than three thousand people (Bordeau 10). The end results of these attacks was a full scale war between the United States and Al-Qaeda, and the hate and discrimination Muslims across the world faced due to the action of these Muslim extremist groups. In addition, “Islamophobia swept through England London attacks in August 2006 following the July 7, 2005 terrorist bus bombings that killed 52 people” (Bordeau 34). In 2008, a study done by the Pew Research Center discovered that 23% reported holding unfavourable views of Muslims (Bordeau 34). Britain and other countries have been attempting to benefit from this wave of Islamophobia.
