The Islam culture and religion has been around, dating all the way back to 622 A.D. It is the fastest growing and second largest religions. Even with such a large following, most people are still unaware of the practices and traditions of the Islamic culture. Muslims live a very structured life, with important events that take place each and every year. One of the topics that truly grabbed my attention was the Five Pillars of Islam. Each pillar containing a very important meaning that the Muslim people live by. As in every religion there are different practices that the participants of that particular religion live by and follow. “To submit to God,” is the meaning of the Islam religion as a whole and is based on these five pillars. Within their practices the Five Pillars are very relevant and important, in the remainder of the paper we will plunge into great depths about each of the five pillars gaining a better understanding and the meaning of each of them. The first of the five pillars is, Shahadah. This is the most essential expression of Islamic beliefs. Shahadah states that “there is no God but God, and Muhammad is the Messenger of God.”

Sawm is a very significant part for the Muslims in the Islamic culture. Fasting occurs once a year during the month Ramadan which is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar year. All Muslims above the age of ten are required to refrain from drinking, eating, and sexual intercourse during the daylight hours. Muslims that are mentally or physically ill, pregnant, elderly, travelers, and/or soldiers are exceptions but, are expected to fast later on when they become able to. The experience of the whole city or village fasting together would strengthen the sense of a single community spread over time and space. The end of Ramadan is celebrated as one of two amazing festivals of the year. During this time there would be days filled with visits, presents, and
