A soft creak echoed through his room, startling Aiden awake. Using the back of his thumb, he brushed the tears from his cheeks. Aiden rubbed his eyes to clear his blurry vision. Another quiet creak could be heard from near Aiden’s window. He jumped, eyes widening. Aiden glanced at his window, and watched as it opened s l o w l y. The sound of nails scratching wood could be heard, as loud as gunshots in the silent night.

Aiden watched in horror, eyes widening once again. His breath hitched in his throat. Fear clouded all thought in his brain as he saw two skeletal hands reach and grab ahold of the windowsill. Her skin glowed softly in the moonlight, making her appear as pale as a ghost.

Her long auburn hair was pulled back in a ponytail, loose, choppy and covered in blood and grime. An asylum gown hung limply on her skeletal form. Her ribs and hipbones could be seen easily through the rips in the gown. A straight jacked hung in shreds off her left wrist. Scars littered her body. From there he could see that Uncle Buzz’s tattoos consisted of a crucifix on his wasted left pectoral the lower part of which was obscured by the hospital gown; a skull and crossbones on the pale, hairless flesh of his left inner forearm; and the name Tanya, in what was once ornate, flowing script, spanning his right bicep and forming a legend for the very blurry image of what appeared to be a mermaid. To his astonishment, tears filled Victor’s eyes at the sight of this, and he had to stare with all his strength at the raucous scene on the television until there was no danger of the tears falling. In the chair on the other side of the bed his grandmother drifted in and out of sleep, so Victor muted the television and watched a silent parade…

The rough dark storm arising from the clouds only made it seem more like fate. After all, Adrius only awoke from the eerily loud sounds outside. He creaked downstairs to his parent’s bedroom, like any 6-year-old would do when they woke up at midnight, but the fear from the noises was only the start of it all. He creaked open the door to where he thought his parents were, but where were they? Looking around the room, he saw nothing but an empty bed, a cupboard and all the other furniture found in a bedroom, with the only missing thing in the room being his parents.…
